Floyd Mayweather vs Andre BertoBy Chris Williams: In Floyd Mayweather Jr’s career-ending victory last night over a badly over-matched Andre Berto, Mayweather landed an absurd 57% of his punches compared to Berto’s anemic 17% connect percentage at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather could seemingly not miss with his punches last night. Part of the reason was because Berto was always there right in front of Mayweather not using any head movement or any angles to speak of to keep out of the way of his shots.

It just makes you wonder what Berto’s trainer Virgil Hunter has been teaching him all this time that he’s been at the helm as his trainer. Berto fought like a novice for the full 12 rounds of the fight, and did little more than land a couple of good left hooks in the entire fight.

According to CompuBox, Berto landed just 83 of 495 punches for a 17% connect rate. Mayweather landed over twice as many punches at 232 of 410 shots for a connect percentage of 57%.
“My career is over. It’s official,” Mayweather said in winning by a 12 round unanimous decision by the scores of 120-108, 118-110 and 117-111.

Two of the judges were doing Berto a huge favor in scoring the fight 118-110 and 117-111. The 120-108 score was the best score out of the three in terms of giving the best description of what really took place in this one-sided fight. It was a nightmare for the 32-year-old Berto, because he wound up getting totally clowned by Mayweather and made to look like he didn’t belong in there with him.

I like Berto a lot and was a big fan of his eight or nine years ago, but he’s pretty well past it at this point in his career. Say what you want about Berto’s performance last night, he still looked better than Manny Pacquiao did against Mayweather in their fight last May. Berto looked a lot better than Pacquiao and did more damage to Mayweather. Berto puffed up Mayweather’s right eye with his left hook.

I don’t fault Mayweather for choosing him to fight given that this was his last fight of his career. But just the same, Berto had to have been more than a little embarrassed with the way that Mayweather was clowning him all night long last night.

Berto couldn’t do anything at all. If it were someone like Marcos Maidana, he likely would have put in plan-B by trying to rough Mayweather up, but Berto and his trainer Virgil Hunter had no ideas at all. They just stuck with the tired old plan-A all night long, and they ended up looking bad.

“That means it’s part of boxing history. Records are made to be broken,” Mayweather said about equaling Rocky Marciano’s 49-0 record via ESPN.com. “Hopefully, we can find the next Floyd Mayweather who can break the record.”

If Mayweather is talking about wanting to fight someone who he can sign for his Mayweather Promotions stable that can one day break Marciano’s record, then he’s going to need to think about looking to sign some of the guys like Errol Spence. Mayweather needs to keep an eye on the amateurs so that he can get to them before the other promoters do. That’s the best way for Mayweather to get some quality fighters without having to spend a great deal of money right from the start.
