De La Hoya slams Mayweather for boring fight

Floyd Mayweather vs Andre BertoBy Allan Fox: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya kicked sand in the face of Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. (49-0, 26 KOs) last night on his Twitter account for his very boring 12 round unanimous decision win over Andre Berto (30-4, 23 KOs) on Showtime PPV from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather won the fight by the scores of 120-108, 117-111 and 118-110. De La Hoya isn’t the only one that was bored by Mayweather’s fight last night. The internet message boards were filled with angry boxing fans who felt that the Mayweather-Berto fight was an incredibly boring affair and not worth the $75.99 that the fight cost on PPV.

This was a fight that arguably hurt Mayweather’s image and legacy rather than helped it. Could you imagine a boxing great like Jack Dempsey or Sugar Ray Robinson ending their careers with an embarrassment like this?

Mayweather had told the boxing world repeatedly that he was going to ‘push the limits’ and give the fans something really special with his final performance of his career. What the fans got instead was a full fight with a lot of clinching, wrestling and running from Mayweather from start to finish. De La Hoya wasn’t pleased with what he saw from that fight, and

“I’m sure glad I decided for Disney movies with my kids tonight,” De La Hoya said on his Twitter. “Now that the worst boxing era is over let’s look forward to the next 10 years. #Canelo #Cotto #Golovkin #Lemieux. What do you expect? [Jesus] Soto [Karass] knocked him [Berto] out. I’m going to miss Floyd’s action packed fights with prime fighters.”

De La Hoya then re-tweeted the following Tweets:

“TBE: Totally Boring Every time.”

“The best thing I can say is it was a Mayweather fight. Also the worst thing I can say.”

“Some fights set the sport forward, and then we get this ****. Save us, Canelo.”

“Crowd booing loudly in round 12. Mayweather not looking to finish Berto, he’s content with this.”

“Floyd picked Berto for this exact reason. He can joke around, have fun, and zero threat to him. It’s the joke we thought it would be.”

“Now I know why MGM Grand was giving me free tickets!! Boring as ****. #Hugfest. #MayweatherBerto #****this.”

What’s sad is that Mayweather seemed to have a look on his face during the fight like he thought the boxing fans were enjoying his dull fight. Mayweather looked like he didn’t realize that the fans were bored and unhappy with all the holding and lack of fighting. Mayweather was clowning around, holding, pot shotting and running through much of the fight. It was such a bad performance.

Berto looked like a fighter that was completely over-the-hill. The quick reflexes that Berto had 10 years ago were completely gone. He showed that he could no longer pull the trigger on his shots. We’d already seen that Berto was a shot fighter in his recent fights against Josesito Lopez, Steven Upsher Chambers and Jesus Soto Karass, but he really showed it last night. It looked like Mayweather was fighting a 2nd tier fighter rather than a top contender, and it made him look really bad for having selected him in the first place. What was worse is that boxing fans had to pay money to see this horrible fight.

It wouldn’t be surprising if Mayweather gets up this morning with the memory of his fight being like a bad hangover for him. I doubt that though. He likely thinks that he put on a great performance en entertained the fans. That’s the sad part. I don’t think Mayweather even realizes how boring his performance was last night.

If Mayweather was going to continue his career after this fight, I think it would be downhill for him with him losing more and more fans each time he fights. By now the boxing fans are starting to realize that Mayweather is not an entertaining fighter like someone like Gennady Golovkin. When you see a Golovkin fight, you arguably get your money’s worth because he looks to get a knockout with every punch he throws. With Mayweather, it’s a much different story. You see a lot of holding, running and pot shots from him. It’s frustrating for me to watch his fights because it’s just entertaining. It just makes you wonder how Mayweather built up a huge fan base in the first place.
