Image: Will the Cotto vs. Canelo bout be listed on the top of the Puerto Rico vs. Mexico rivalry?By Gerardo Granados: Some young fight fans might not know much about the rich boxing rivalry between two Boxing Nations, one rivalry that is old and has witnessed many epic battles. Maybe the reader is young and just can remember to have seen the Jorge Arce vs Wilfredo Vasquez Jr bout or the Orlando Salido vs. Juan Manuel Lopez bouts.

If the reader can recall the Julio Cesar Chavez vs Hector Macho Camacho bout then you might not be so young, if you can recall to have watched the Jose Luis Ramirez vs Edwin Chapo Rosario bouts it could mean that you are a long time fight fan, if you watched the Wilfredo Gomez vs. Salvador Sanchez epic battle it means that you are an old fight fan but if you can recall the Luis Villanueva Paramo Kid Azteca vs. Louis Cocoa Kid it can only mean that you are a fortunate fight fan.

On November 21st at the Mandalay Bay, in Las Vegas, Nevada, four time division champion Miguel Cotto W40 (33)-L4-D0 will try to defend his WBC middle title against former WBA-WBC light middle champion Saul Canelo Alvarez W45(32)-L1-D1. I think that this bout won’t paralyze Mexico and Puerto Rico as the Julio Cesar Chavez vs. Hector “Macho” Camacho bout did, but it could as well revive a rivalry in countries where prize fighting is revered.

Puerto Rico boxers have the lead in title wins over Mexican fighters but it is close. The numbers are cold and cannot reflect the epic battles that resulted from a rivalry in which the pride to win is bigger than numbers.

For the Cotto vs. Canelo bout to be listed on the Puerto Rico vs Mexico boxing rivalry is an honor but to be listed on the top could be an almost impossible feat. A friend of mine asked me if this bout can be so good to deserve to be listed on the top. My friend is a young fight fan and hasn’t watched pro boxing for a long time so I recommend to him to watch a list to be able decide if this bout will deserve to be listed on the top.

If the reader hasn’t seen any of the bouts listed below then you should consider buying a cag of beer and enough snacks to enjoy while watching with your friends.

This list is only a personal list and the reader must recall other bouts worth to mention: Wilfredo Gomez vs Carlos Zarate, Ivan Calderon vs Giovani Segura, Angel Espada vs Pipino Cuevas, Salvador Sanchez vs Juan Laporte, Wilfredo Gomez vs Lupe Pintor, Tito Trinidad vs Yory Boy Campas, Wilfredo Benitez vs Carlos Palomino, Antonio Margarito vs Miguel Cotto, Julio Cesar Chavez vs Hector Camacho, Salvador Sanchez vs Wilfredo Gomez, Edwin Rosario vs Jose Luis Ramirez, Jorge Arce vs Wilfredo Vazquez Jr, Orlando Salido vs Juan Manuel Lopez, Julio Cesar Chavez vs Edwin Rosario, Tito Trinidad vs Fernando Vargas, John John Molina vs Tony Lopez, Tito Trinidad vs Oscar de la Hoya & Wilfredo Vazquez vs Raul Jibaro Perez.

Styles make fights they say and both Cotto and Canelo fighting style could bring an epic battle, it is very improbable to see a boxing chess match next November 21. But will this bout end up surpassing the epic battles from the past?
