Mora’s left leg slid out from under him when he was trying to dodge a right hand from Jacobs in the 2nd round. While slipping to the canvas, Mora injured his ankle, which was later said to have been fractured.

The fight was then stopped by referee Gary Rosato with Jacobs getting a TKO in the 2nd, even though he technically didn’t land a punch. The fight should have been ruled a no contest instead of a knockout win for Jacobs.

Mora wants a rematch, but it’s going to be up to the World Boxing Association to determine whether he’ll get one or not. Jacobs says he doesn’t want to take his career backwards because he’s looking to get a big money fight against former WBO middleweight champion Peter Quillin before the end of the year in a fight that will be staged in Brooklyn, New York.

“I heard my ankle snap and my knee also felt funny and I couldn’t put pressure on it,” Mora explained. “I knew the first few rounds would be tough, we expected that. My plan was to take him into deep water. Adrenaline can make you do stupid things. With a puncher like Danny, I needed movement,” Mora said. “I told you I came here to fight. I give him credit, but I came to take this championship. I want a rematch.”

It’s going to be up to the WBA to determine whether there will be a rematch or not. If they order a rematch, then there’s nothing that Jacobs can do other than to give Mora the rematch unless he’s willing to vacate his title or have it stripped from him by the WBA. It wouldn’t be surprising if we see that happen because Jacobs is managed by Al Haymon, who previously had Quillin vacate his WBO 160lb title rather than face Matt Korobov.

The Jacobs-Mora fight was televised on Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on ESPN on free television.

Jacobs answered Mora back in his request for a rematch, saying “No rematch, no reason to go backwards. Thank God for this victory, but I’m not going to give him a rematch just because,” Jacobs responded. “I said did a guy with nine knockouts really knock me down? I wanted to stop him on my own. I didn’t want him to quit on the stool but I know that he knew it was going to end in a couple of rounds anyway.

I want Peter Quillin next. It’s a fight the fans deserve. Brooklyn always supports both of us and it would be a great way to close out the year,” he continued. “I think these Brooklynites deserve something special and I think me and ‘Kid Chocolate’ would be that special fight here at Barclays. We’re on the ‘A’ side now, we’re champions, so let’s do it!”

The fight probably should be a no contest because when you have a fighter going down without getting hit, it should be a no contest. The WBA would be doing the right thing by scoring it as a no contest. Ordering a rematch might be something that they’re not interested in doing though because a Jacobs vs. Quillin fight would be a big money fight, and a lot more interesting than another mismatch between Mora and Jacobs. The fight shouldn’t have been made in the first place because there were far better contenders in the middleweight division ready and willing to fight Jacobs than an aging fighter like Mora.

“X-rays show I was TKO’d by avulsion fracture on my right ankle and NOT by Daniel JacobsTKO #Rematch,” said Mora on his Twitter. “Team Jacobs asked for a rematch clause as of last week and I agreed. Hope the “champ” demands to use it. #Jacobs-Mora. NO CONTEST! @Lou Dibella #Jacobs-Mora. We knew Jacobs hit hard, but he didn’t expect me to hard. We exchanged knockdowns and had a close 2nd round. How is that a victory for him? I heard my ankle pop & couldn’t apply pressure. Knee feels funny too. Unfortunate, but I DONT DESERVE LOSS.”
