Roy Jones Jr. targeting Krzysztof Glowacki for WBO cruiserweight title

By Jim Dower: With 46-year-old Roy Jones Jr’s recent win over Eric Watkins last week, Jones Jr. is now targeting newly crowned WBO cruiserweight champion Krzysztof Glowacki for his title. Glowacki is coming off of an impressive 11th round stoppage win over the long-standing WBO cruiserweight champion Marco Huck on August 14th at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

I don’t think too many boxing fans expected Huck to lose to the little known No.1 WBO Glowacki, but he struggled from the 1st round with the Polish fighter’s southpaw stance and powerful punches. As good as Glowacki looked in that fight, it’s pretty much impossible to see the 46-year-old Jones being able to do anything against him other than to lose.

Jones Jr. hasn’t beaten any top fighter for over 10 years, and he’s certainly not going to start again by beating someone as good as Glowacki. If Huck couldn’t beat Glowacki then Jones Jr. has no chance at all. Jones had been hoping to get a title shot against Huck, and he even came to the Huck-Glowacki fight to scout out Huck, but unfortunately things didn’t go well for Huck.

“Glowacki already got the phone call that he got what I want,” Jones said via ESPN.com. “He already got the call. I made the call immediately that night. You beat [Huck]. I want that. That’s mine. You took it from him — now I got to get it from you.”

The bad news for Jones Jr. is that he’s likely not going to be able to get a shot at Glowacki’s WBO title unless he picks up a top 15 ranking by the WBO. World Boxing Organization president isn’t going to let Glowacki fight a non-top 15 ranked contender for a voluntary defense. He’s said no to a lot of other WBO world champions that have attempted to face 2nd tier opposition for their title defenses, and I can’t see him changing his mind for a Glowacki-Jones fight.

Jones has a couple of fights coming up against 42-year-old journeyman Danny Santiago (33-7-1, 19 KOs) on August 29th. Jones also has a fight scheduled on September 12th against 42-year-old Tony Moran (15-6, 5 KOs) at the Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool, England. If the WBO president is impressed at Jones’ wins over those two aging fighters, then maybe he’ll give him a top 15 ranking, and this in turn will enable Glowacki to face the 46-year-old Jones Jr.

Besides Jones needing a top 15 ranking by the WBO, he’ll need Glowacki to show interest in the fight. Huck was reportedly interest in facing Jones, but it’s unclear whether Glowacki would see any point in taking that fight.
