Mosley wants Marquez, Mayweather, Pacquiao or Cotto next

By Allan Fox: Shane Mosley (48-9-1, 40 KOs) is hoping to use his victory over former two division world champion Ricardo Mayorga (31-9-1, 25 KOs) from last Saturday night to get a fight against a veteran big name fighter such as Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao, Miguel Cotto or Juan Manuel Marquez.

The 43-year-old Mosley doesn’t want to fight the younger contenders like Errol Spence Jr. He says wants the big names. Unfortunately for Mosley, he’s already been soundly beaten by Mayweather and Pacquiao, so it’s not a fight that would sell to the boxing public even if they did agree to fight Mosley. He lost to Mayweather and Pacquiao by one-sided decisions already, and neither of those fighters has mentioned being interested in fighting him.

“I’m going for the veteran guys, the Marquez, the Mayweather or Pacquiao, and even Cotto,” Mosley said to thaboxingvoice.

Marquez would be a possibility if he were still fighting, but he’s had a knee problem that has kept him out of the ring since his win over Mike Alvarado in early 2014. It’s doubtful that Marquez will want to come back and fight an older guy like Shane Mosley rather than one of the world title holders like IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook. Marquez wants a chance to fight for another world title before he retires from boxing, and Mosley doesn’t have anything to offer him.

Cotto isn’t likely going to waste his time fighting a guy like Mosley because it’s not a fight that the boxing public is demanding right now. The fans want to see Cotto fight Gennady “GGG” Golovkin if he wins his next fight against former WBA/WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez on November 21st at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

If not Golovkin, then fans want to see Cotto fight Canelo again or Mayweather. I don’t know of anyone that is calling for a Cotto vs. Mosley fight – at least not yet. Maybe if Cotto gets older is a shot fighter, then I think that there might be some interested in a Cotto-Mosley fight.

Mosley would have a better chance of getting fights against junior middleweight champions Erislandy Lara and Cornelius Bundrage. Those guys might be interested in fighting someone as well-known as Mosley, but it would also likely depend on Mosley getting a top 15 ranking.

I’m not sure that the IBF or WBA would give Lara or Bundrage the green light to fight a non-15 ranked fighter like Mosley. If he keeps winning in beating guys like Mayorga or whoever, he’ll eventually get a top 15 ranking. It might take Mosley a little longer to get a top 15 ranking if he focuses on fighting older guys.

Mosley might not like the idea of fighting a little known contender like Errol Spence, but by beating someone like him, it would be the quickest way for Mosley to get a top 15 ranking at 147. If he wants a top 15 ranking at 154, then Mosley needs to fight someone like Demetrius Andrade. Those would be tough outs for Mosley, but they would at least give him the top 15 rankings that he would need to fight for a world title.
