Mayweather vs. Berto makes business sense

floyd36By Michael Gill: For over a couple of months now, the boxing public had awaited the latest name of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. lottery. For months, Floyd had hinted that he was eyeing Andre Berto as his next opponent, to many this was just Floyd playing the media, for we would all expect for him to name a legitimate contender.

The joke was on us, Floyd was serious about facing Berto on September 12th. Both the public and boxing media have all protested their displeasure with the decision. Many of which, have declared this decision has being one that will tarnish Floyd’s legacy, especially “if” Floyd is to retire after his bout with Berto.

As a boxing fan, it is easy to be disappointed about Mayweather vs Berto, but we all know that Floyd always has an ace up his sleeve.

With Saul “Canelo” Alvarez vs. Miguel Cotto reportedly fighting on November 21st and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin vs. David Lemieux clashing on October 17th, both fights being on paper per view, boxing fans were hoping for better a matchup for Floyd to kick off the fall boxing season. Floyd Mayweather is a business man, he knows that fight “49” is not as big as “50”. Why take the risk of fighting against an opponent that could derail a potential mega fight in May 2016. The fight against Berto is nothing more than Floyd keeping busy for what could potentially be an epic fight next year. Albeit, it would have been better if the fight was to be held on CBS or Showtime, but Floyd is a business man and felt this was the best way to maximize his payday. This is what Floyd does best, makes moves like this one to set us up for something bigger.

My prediction and seemingly the prediction of every boxing fan is that Floyd will return for his 50th fight. I do believe it will be against the winner of Canelo vs. Cotto. This will provide Floyd the opportunity to go for his 50th straight win along with winning the middleweight championship. Although he did beat both Canelo and Cotto convincingly, they have both rebounded successfully and feel better prepared to handle Floyd the second go around. I think this is the best situation for all fight fans.
