Mayweather: There was so much hype about Pacquiao

Floyd Mayweather and Andre BertoBy Chris Williams: Floyd Mayweather Jr. said that the media had built up so much hype about Filipino superstar over the years, and all he did was expose the hype when he got inside the ring and beat Pacquiao by a fairly one-sided 12 round unanimous decision on May 2nd of this year in beautiful Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather didn’t say whether he was expecting more from Pacquiao after hearing all the stuff about him from the media over the years, but I believe that’s the case. Mayweather came into the fight expecting one thing and ended up seeing a much less impressive fighter than what he’s been expecting.

Pacquiao is now pushing for a rematch with Mayweather in 2016 if he can get his promoter Bob Arum to setup the fight. You just don’t know if Arum can do this, especially with him saying that Pacquiao’s loss last May doesn’t mean that he has to take smaller money the second time around. If Arum is going to try and negotiate a rematch between Mayweather and Pacquiao with the goal in mind to get a 50-50 or 55-45 purse split rather than the previous one of 60-40 in favor of Mayweather, then Arum is wasting his time.

Mayweather probably isn’t going to be favorable to giving the Filipino star parity when it comes to negotiating the fight. When you lose like Pacquiao did, then it pretty automatically means you take an even smaller cut of the financial pie the second time around. If Pacquiao and Arum don’t like it, then they can go ahead and continue fighting guys like Brandon Rios, Tim Bradley and Chris Algieri.

“Everyone was saying Floyd Mayweather is ducking and dodging [Pacquiao],” Mayweather said to the media. “I did what I had to do, no matter how I won as long as I won. I just think that there was so much hype about him [Pacquiao],” Mayweather said. “I upheld my end of the bargain. No excuses. If I came up short, there’s nothing I can do about it or complain about. If I go out there and make upwards of $300 million in 36 minutes, I’m blessed,” said Mayweather.

We definitely heard excuses from Pacquiao’s side after his loss to Mayweather. It would have been nice if Pacquiao had taken the high road after the loss and kept his mouth shut about his shoulder injury. But instead of staying quiet, Pacquiao and Arum brought up a shoulder injury that was a preexisting condition before the fight, and that got aggravated.

There was nothing that Pacquiao could do about the loss, and it made no sense for him to bring up an injury after the fact because it just made him look like a poor sport in the eyes of a lot of boxing fans. What also made Pacquiao look bad was how he claimed that he should have been given the victory after the fight when he was speaking with the media.

It’s never good for a fighter not to give credit to their opponent after the fight, and it always looks bad when they second guess the good judges for them doing the thankless task of scoring a fight. It’s the judges who make the decision in who wins or loses the fights. The fighters are supposed to just stay quiet and accept what the judges of the contest say.

Speaking about Berto, Mayweather said “He got a good knockout ratio. He’s a two-time world champion. I can only judge a man by his last fight, and in his last fight he got a knockout. When you’re old, it’s not about working harder, it’s about working smarter, and we believe in taking less punishment. We don’t believe in taking no punishment. If we keep a guy on the outside, we’re going to beat him on the outside. If we’re going to beat him on the inside, then we’re going to beat him on the inside. We’re going to do whatever we have to do to be victorious. Floyd Mayweather is a winner when it’s all said and done.”

Berto has done a great job with his career, and he’s got a lot of knockouts, a lot of hand speed, and a lot of punching power. Berto previously held the IBF and WBC welterweight titles, and he was seen as one of the top three welterweight fighters in the division up until 2011. After that period, Berto had injury problems that slowed his career. It wasn’t until recently that he got healthy again and he’s looked spectacular in his last two fights against Josesito Lopez and Steven Upsher Chambers.
