Mayweather talks Berto, Khan, Thurman & Spence

Floyd Mayweather(Photo credit: Esther Lin/SHOWTIME) By Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) made it clear today at the kickoff press conference at the J.W. Marriott Los Angeles L.A. Live that his fight against Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) on September 12th will be the last one of his long 19-year-old career. Mayweather says he values his health too much to continue on after this fight. He just walks to walk away after this fight, and he feel very satisfied with what he’s accomplished with his long career.

“I chose Berto because he’s very exciting. I’ve been getting backlash. No one is forced to buy the fight. Andre Berto is going to push Floyd Mayweather to the limit. Berto is a tough competitor. He’s a very tough guy, hungry. The difference between Berto and Manny Pacquiao is you guys put all the hype in Manny Pacquiao, that’s what the media did. This fight is a very interesting match-up. I said to myself who is always in an exciting fight? Who has fast hands? Who has always been in an exciting fight?”

“Amir Khan has to get past Danny Garcia. That’s why he’s not getting this fight,” Mayweather said.

Khan probably won’t be too happy to hear the news that Mayweather is telling him he’s not fighting him because he’s done nothing about trying to avenge his 4th round knockout loss to Danny Garcia from 2012. Khan obviously feels that his wins over little 5’5″ Carlos Molina, Julio Diaz, Luis Collazo, Devon Alexander and Chris Algieri were enough to erase his past failures against Danny Garcia, Breidis Prescott and Lamont Peterson. Khan did nothing to try and avenge those three losses, so it’s kind of obvious why Mayweather has elected to bypass him for someone else.

In speaking about WBA “regular” welterweight champion Keith Thurman, Mayweather said “I don’t know him too much. I’ve seen a couple of his fights. I think a good fight for him is Errol Spence.”

Thurman has already said he wants no part of fighting Errol Spence Jr. despite the fact that Mayweather was willing to give up one of his world titles in order for Thurman to fight for the belt against the hard hitting Spence. Thurman feels he shouldn’t have to fight Spence in order to get the Mayweather fight. Thurman believes that his wins over Collazo, Diego Chaves, Robert Guerrero, Leonard Bundu and Jesus Soto Karass were good enough wins to get him the Mayweather fight. Unfortunately for Thurman, Mayweather never asked Thurman to fight those B/C level fighters. Mayweather did ask Thurman to fight Spence, and he was turned down. As a result, Thurman only has himself to blame for not getting the Mayweather fight.

“No 49, this is it. I’ve had a tremendous career,” Mayweather said. “I’m older, and wiser. My health is a major concern for me. September 12th is my last fight.”

I believe that Mayweather will come back in 2016 to continue his career after he beats Berto on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. It’s unclear who Mayweather will fight next tear, but I think it’s obvious who Mayweather won’t be fighting. He won’t be fighting Khan or Thurman. The reason he won’t is because they won’t have fought the guys that Mayweather asked them to fight. With the way that Thurman is reluctant to fight Spence, I think he’d have to be dragged into the ring to fight him. Even then, I think they would have to make sure there was no way for Thurman to get out of the ring, because he really doesn’t want any part of fighting Spence. I don’t see Khan ever fighting Danny Garcia again, nor Prescott or Peterson.

“My time is now! No day is better than the present,” Berto said.

You’ve got to feel sorry for Berto. He’s just some guy that is the prop for Mayweather for what he’s advertising as his last fight of his career. No one is paying much attention to Berto, because he’s just another victim for Mayweather to trounce. This is like Garcia vs. Rod Salka or Garcia vs. Paulie Malignaggi. Berto is not being given any chance of winning this fight, and the reason for that is because he was beaten so badly by Jesus Soto Karass, Victor Ortiz and Robert Guerrero in the past four years. Berto didn’t even look good in his last fight against Josesito Lopez. He was getting dominated by Lopez until he scored a knockout in the 6th round last March.
