Mayweather could continue his career past Berto fight, says Martirosyan

Floyd MayweatherBy Dan Ambrose: Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) has done a good job of convincing people that his September 12th fight against Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) will be the last fight of his career when he gets inside the ring at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, junior middleweight contender Vanes Martirosyan doesn’t believe for a second that Mayweather will be walking away from the sport.

Vanes thinks Mayweather will be coming back to try and capture his 50th win of his career. After all, why would he retire at 49-0, when he could come back for one more fight to finish his career with a perfect 50-0 record.

Mayweather would also make a lot of money if he returns to the ring next year for a second fight against Manny Pacquiao, who is very eager to fight him again so that he can show boxing fans that his loss was just a fluke thing, a product of having an injured shoulder.

“He says it’s his last fight but I think you know, a lot of fighters that quit and retire, they always come back because they miss the spotlight. I think if he quits and stops at 49-0 he’s going to think about 50-0. So you know, I don’t think so but he says it is,” Martirosyan said via Fighthype.com.

I think Vanes is correct about Mayweather returning to the ring in 2016. How do you not come back for one more fight when you have the chance of making $100+ million to fight Pacquiao again? Mayweather would never go out in his backward and deliberately burn $100 million. That’s what Mayweather would be doing if he chose not to come back for that fight.

He’d be burning up $100 million at least, because that’s money in the bank for him if he comes back. Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach would like to see three fights between the two fighters. If Mayweather could stick around for two more fights, he’d be walking away with a likely net worth of a half billion. How do you walk away from money like that? I can understand Mayweather not wanting to waste time fighting guys like Amir Khan, Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia or Keith Thurman.

Those guys would be the same as Mayweather’s fight against Andre Berto. They wouldn’t bring anything to the table because these guys have been so carefully matched since they’ve turned pro. But Mayweather would make a ton of money if he focused on just fighting Pacquiao in 2016, if the Filipino fighter is able to come back successfully from his shoulder surgery.

We still don’t know if Pacquiao’s surgically repaired right shoulder will be able to make it through a training camp without it being torn to bits once again. We also don’t know if Pacquiao will ever be able to regain the strength and flexibility in his shoulder. If he comes into a second fight against Mayweather with only have the strength in his right shoulder, Mayweather is going to clown him worse than he did the last time he beat him.

“You know I fought Berto twice in the amateurs. He has power so it’ll be interesting to see. Virgil [Hunter] is a really good trainer,” Martirosyan said. “Floyd is Floyd. Everybody knows what’s going to happen but it’s interesting to see what Berto’s going to do, maybe something different that we haven’t seen. But you know, Floyd’s Floyd man, we just got to see what Berto’s going to do.”

Berto has a chance to beat Mayweather because he’s got fast hands and excellent punching power, but I don’t think his confidence is fully back to where it was before 2011. He didn’t look confident in his last fight against Josesito Lopez until the 6th round when he hurt him. Before that, it looked like Berto was on his way to yet another loss.

If Berto doesn’t fight with aggressiveness and more importantly with confidence, Mayweather is going to beat him badly and maybe even score a stoppage. This fight could be very competitive or very one-sided depending on which Berto shows up. He used to be a fearless fighter, but he seems to have lost that quality in the last four years of his career. Berto is going to have to fight at a much higher level on September 12th if he wants to avoid being massacred by Mayweather.
