Floyd MayweatherBy Chris Williams: Boxing fans will get a price break for Floyd Mayweather Jr’s upcoming fight against former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) on September 12th on Showtime pay-per-view. Instead of the fight going for $89-99, as was the case for Mayweather’s last fight against Manny Pacquiao, the price for the Mayweather-Berto fight is said to be $64.95/$74.95HD, according to Dan Rafael.

It’s still not official yet, but that’s the number that is being floated around. That’s a $25 discount from Mayweather’s last fight against Pacquiao. The drop in price brings the cost to where it was in Mayweather’s previous fights against Marcos Maidana and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, according to Fight News.

This is a very good deal for the fans because you get to see the best fighter in boxing for only $64. If this is Mayweather’s last fight of his career, then fans are getting a very good price for seeing him fight. To see a master like Mayweather for his last fight, fans should be asked to pay the same price as Mayweather’s last fight against Pacquiao. $99 is a fair deal if this is the last time that you’ll ever get to see Mayweather in the ring.

How much would you have paid to see Hank Aaron, Lou Gehrig or Babe Ruth’s last game? I think you’d have been willing to pay top dollar to see them if you knew that it was going to be the last time they competed; it’s the same thing with Mayweather. If this is the last time he’s going to ever fight, then $64 is a steal. I think it’s a great bargain for the fans. Even if it isn’t Mayweather’s last fight of his career, I still think this is a good price for the fight, because you’re getting a chance to see Mayweather fight what arguably was the No.3 welterweight in all of boxing from 2009.

If Berto has gotten his game back to where it was in 2009, then fans are really getting a good deal. I fully expect Berto to put in a better performance than Pacquiao did last May. Berto is a warrior, and he’s not going to back off if the going gets tough in the first few rounds like we saw with Filipino star. Pacquiao couldn’t take the heat from Mayweather, so he took off and fought a very timid fight just to survive. Then afterwards we heard about how Pacquiao came into the fight with a shoulder injury. A lot of boxing fans to this day still don’t believe Pacquiao’s injury excuse.

However, some boxing fans might not be happy paying $64.95/$74.95HD to see Mayweather fight Berto, a fighter with a 3-3 record in his last 6 fights. These fans don’t agree that Berto is on the same level as Canelo and Maidana in terms of skills, power and standing in the boxing community.

Berto was one of the top welterweights back in 2009, and he was considered a very good fighter. Something has happened with Berto in the last six years. It’s unclear what caused Berto’s game to go downhill so fast. You don’t normally see fighters in their late 20s lost their game like we’ve seen with Berto.

It can’t be age that has caused his decline. It might be more of a case of him picking up bad habits, or perhaps not training as hard as he once did. Berto made a lot of money earlier in his career, and by 2011, he was doing really well. One theory is that Berto lost the edge because of his success. But now with him training with Virgil Hunter and looking good in his last two fights, it’s very possible that Berto has brought himself back to where he was in 2009. He’s hungry, and he still has the punching power and hand speed that he had years ago.

In looking at Berto’s last two fights against Steven Upsher Chambers and Josesito Lopez, I can’t see any difference at all from the Berto that was dominating the welterweight division up until 2009. He looks to be the same fighter. Berto doesn’t have the injuries now slowing him up like he did in the past six years. Berto has had bicep and shoulder problems that have caused him a a great deal of problems.
