Khan: Mayweather is running scared of me because of my size, speed and power

khan4045 (Amir Khan seen here after his very, very tough fight against Marcos Maidana in 2010) By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) says WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) is scared of him because of his speed, size and punching power.

Khan also thinks Mayweather is a liar because he chose not to fight him after he won a poll conducted on his Mayweather Promotions website last year. The poll was one where boxing fans voted to pick the guy they felt Mayweather should fight.

Maidana was leading the poll until Khan encouraged his 1.4 million Twitter followers to vote for him. Khan then won the poll. However, in the other polls on other sites, Maidana was the one that won them rather than Khan.

Mayweather decided that he was better off fighting the winner of the other polls rather than the one on his website

Mayweather was doing the right thing in selecting Maidana to fight rather than Khan, because there wasn’t much interest in a Mayweather-Khan fight at that time other than in that one poll that had Khan winning. If Mayweather had picked Khan out at the time, he would have been facing a guy with a 2-2 record in his last four fights, and that would have made him look really bad. Mayweather pointed that point himself.

“I remember the time he picked Maidana over me even though I won the votes on the Internet and he still didn’t pick me,” Khan said via sportingnews.com. “Fight fans should realize is that Floyd is a liar. First when he said I’m going to let the fans pick who I fight, he didn’t what he said he was going to do because the fight fans voted and they all voted Amir Khan. And he still picked Maidana, someone who I’ve already beaten, put down and gave him a beating and beat him in a better style that Floyd Mayweather beat him.”

It’s kind of amusing that Khan is saying that he gave Maidana a beating in their fight in 2010, because that’s not what I remember of the fight. I do remember that Khan dropped Maidana with a body shot early in the fight, but after Maidana got back up, Khan ran for the rest of the fight. He literally ran from Maidana, making it impossible for him to land much of anything.

In the 10th round, Maidana hurt Khan with a right hand to the head that had him on Bambi legs. The fight should have arguably been stopped at that moment because Khan was defenseless after getting hurt, and all he was doing was holding on. The strange part that came in the aftermath of Maidana hurting Khan was how the referee Joe Cortez inserted himself into the fight by constantly breaking the action when Maidana was trying to finish Khan off in close.

Cortez looked like he’d never seen a fighter fight on the inside before because he kept pulling Maidana off of Khan while he giving him a ferocious beating in close. Even when Khan was holding onto one of Maidana’s arms and taking repeated clubbing right hands to the head, Cortez stepped in to pull Maidana off of Khan and reset the action.

After the fight, Khan’s face was badly swollen, as was his nose. He looked kind of like a red-faced lion. He really was beaten up bad. If you look at Maidana’s face, I don’t remember there being a mark on it. He looked like he’d gone out for a light job. He was not beaten like Khan says. It was more of the opposite with Khan being the one who was beaten and beaten badly.

Khan had other chances to get a fight against Mayweather after the poll, but Khan wasn’t fighting the right guys. He fought Devon Alexander, but he didn’t take the fight with him when he needed to. Instead of Khan fighting Alexander while he still held the IBF welterweight title, Khan waited until Alexander had been beaten by Shawn Porter before he faced him. That looked bad for Khan to be fighting Porter’s leftovers. Khan also fought the likes of Luis Collazo and Chris Algieri. Neither of these guys are big names, and neither were relevant at the time that Khan fought them. Algieri was coming off of a one-sided 2 round decision loss to Manny Pacquiao. Collazo hadn’t done anything with his career since losing to Andre Berto six years prior.

“Floyd is running scared because of the size of me, the hand speed I have, the power and the speed,” Khan said.

I don’t think it’s a case of Mayweather being scared of Khan at all. I just don’t think there’s any upside in Mayweather fighting a guy like Khan. As Mayweather pointed out, Khan still has unfinished business against Danny Garcia, a fighter who knocked Khan out in 4 rounds three years ago in 2012. Do you know how bad that looks for a fighter like Khan not to have even tried to avenge his losses to guys like Garcia, Lamont Peterson and Breidis Prescott? I mean, I can understand Khan walking away from one loss without coming back to try and avenge the loss, but I can’t understand how Khan would walk away from three losses without getting at least one of them back in the ring so that he can try and avenge the loss.

Why would Mayweather want to fight Khan rather than the guys that beat him? If Mayweather were to face anyone, he would be better off facing Danny Garcia or Lamont Peterson, because those guys both whipped Khan. Obviously, Mayweather can’t fight Prescott, because his career has really tanked since his win over Khan seven years ago, but that doesn’t mean that Khan can’t face Prescott again. It’s not as if Khan is facing anyone good at this point in his career. He’s had three years of tune-up fights after his loss to Garcia, so he could have easily fought Prescott by now to show the boxing fans that his loss to him was just a fluke thing of getting caught with a big shot that he didn’t see coming.
