EW5G6415(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Joshua Broom: Saturday nights PBC on ESPN broadcast from the Barclays Center opened up with an action packed, knockdown filled affair as hometown fighter Danny “The Miracle Man” Jacobs (30-1 27 KO) defended his WBA “Regular” 160 lb title against former WBC 154 lb champion Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora (28-4-2 9 KO) in the first bout of the evening.

The 34 year old Mora opened the first round as the busier fighter, landing tricky combinations to the body and head of the 28 year old Jacobs.

The action went on like this until Jacobs landed a thunderous left to the chin of the challenger Mora causing the first knockdown of the fight. Mora beat the count and rose to his feet and landed his own left that resulted in a semi-flash knockdown of Jacobs almost 8 seconds later, just before the bell rang signaling an end to the thrilling first round.

In the second Mora was once again being the busier fighter, though Jacobs was starting to find a home for his straight right hand. It was with a clubbing right that Jacobs landed to Mora’s head along the ropes that caused a third -and final- knockdown that caused Mora’s leg to fold under hiim on his way to the canvass and cause a major ankle injury that saw him unable to continue on in the contest.

Danny Jacobs was declared the winner by 2nd round TKO and made the second defense of his ” World Title” in the process.

The main event of the evening pitted 34 year old Brooklynite Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi (33-7 7 KO) against undefeated Philadelphia native and former 140 lb champion Danny “Swift” Garcia (31-0 18 KO) in a lopsided matchup in which Malignaggi (who hadn’t seen ring action the 16 months since his blowout loss to Shawn Porter) never was able to get going. Garcia pounded away on the shopworn Malignaggi for 9 rounds until referee Arthur Mercante Jr. called a compassionate halt to the bout after seeing Malignagi sustain continued damage in front of his hometown fans.

Garcia didn’t look like a world beater in his one sided halting of Malignaggi, though “Swift” should continue on to garner another notable fight in his next outing.

For Malignaggi, this type of loss should signal the end of a standout career in which he captured two world titles and fought many notable names over a 14 year span.
