Berto: This is going to be a fairytale ending for me against Mayweather

Andre BertoBy Dan Ambrose: Former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) is poised to rewrite the history books on September 12th, when he turns his career completely around in the process of handing unbeaten Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) his first loss of his career when he gets him inside the squared circle in their fight on Showtime pay-per-view at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Berto says he’s familiar with Mayweather’s fighting style after seeing his fights for years now, and he thinks he’s going to cause a huge upset by beating the 38-year-old. It’s certainly in Berto’s best interest to do his utmost to defeat Mayweather, because that gives Berto his best chance of getting a second big money rematch.

Getting two paydays against Mayweather would set Berto up for life financially if he’s already not setup in that department. Marcos Maidana is living really well in Argentina with the big money he got from his two fights with Mayweather.

The difference here is that Berto will have to defeat Mayweather to have a chance at a second fight with him. He’s not going to get a rematch with him just by fighting well and losing a close 12 round decision.

“I’m feeling fast. I’m feeling stronger. I’m 152 pounds right now,” Berto said to the media. “You’re going to see a kid in there that’s been at the high roads, that’s had his downfalls and who’s going to make it right back. This could very well be a fairytale end to the situation. Everything I’ve accomplished, all the setbacks I’ve had, and everything has been in front of the camera lens. Everyone can relate to what I’ve been through. I can’t hide anything from you guys. You guys have seen it. So to get this done, like I know that I can, I have no choice but to get love from the people,” Berto said.

It would be nice for Berto to get a fairytale ending with his career if he were to beat Mayweather in September. It wouldn’t even matter if Berto lost the second fight with Mayweather. Just being the first guy to beat Mayweather and getting the second payday against him would be reward enough for Berto. It wouldn’t matter if Berto lost the remaining fights of his career. Just having the money from his two fights against Mayweather, and the victory itself would likely be enough for Berto to be satisfied with what he’s accomplished with his career.

When asked if Mayweather will ever fight UFC female bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, Berto said “That will never happen, Mayweather-Ronda Rousey. Why?”

With the Rousey vs. Mayweather feud that’s been going on since Rousey took a verbal shot at Mayweather at the ESPYs in winning “Fighter of the Year,” there are some people pushing for Mayweather and Rousey to fight each other in a UFC fight. It makes no sense at all. It especially makes no sense given that Rousey hasn’t even proven she’s the best female MMA fighter by taking on Cyborg. There are some people who feel that Rousey isn’t up to the task. Of course, Mayweather could never fight Rousey because the criticism that he’d get for that fight would be tremendous. It would be a no-win situation for him no matter what happened in the fight.

“A lot of people when they fight Floyd Mayweather, they’re kind of in shock in the moment. But I’ve known the guy; I’ve seen the guy forever. I’ve always been really fast and naturally powerful,” Berto said. “I used to use those things to overcome my opponents. [Trainer] Virgil [Hunter] put that in technical form.”

Berto isn’t the only fighter who is familiar with Mayweather’s fighting style. Manny Pacquiao was familiar with Mayweather’s fighting style after watching him perform for years, yet Pacquiao was as helpless as a baby in the ring when the two of them went at it last May.

While some boxing fans would blame Pacquiao’s loss on him entering the match with an injured shoulder, I don’t think it would have made any difference at all. Mayweather was just too good for Pacquiao. Berto is likely to be in the same boat as Pacquiao when he gets in there with him on September 12th. I don’t think it’s going to be a fairytale ending for Berto. I think it’ll be more of a case of it being a nightmare.
