By Scott Gilfoid: WBC super middleweight champion Badou Jack (19-1-1, 12 KOs) plans on stealing the show from Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Andre Berto in their main event fight on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Jack, 31, will be defending his title against George Groves (21-1, 16 KOs) in his first defense of his newly won WBC 168lb title.

Jack will be making his first defense against his mandatory challenger. He doesn’t mind having to face his mandatory right away because he feels confident that he’s going to be able to defeat him, and send him back home a beaten fighter.

If Jack is going to steal the thunder from the Mayweather-Berto fight then he’s going to need a highlight reel knockout of the 27-yer-old Groves, which is entirely possible considering that Groves doesn’t have the greatest chin in the world. We saw Carl Froch knock Groves clean out last year in their rematch in May, and it didn’t even look like one of Froch’s best shots.

Froch just wound up and nailed Groves with a simple right hand and Groves hit the deck like a sack of potatoes hitting the floor. Groves didn’t even know what hit him. He dropped to the canvas with his left leg bent painfully underneath him, making him look like a human pretzel. Now if a fighter like the 37-year-old Froch was able to do that to Groves, then it’s entirely possible that the hard hitting Badou Jack can do the same thing because he’s got excellent punching power.

“Honestly, I think this fight could steal the show and will be the fight of the night. This will be very, very entertaining,” Jack said. “I’m not Froch and don’t fight like Froch. We have different styles. My only focus is on the game plan and executing it. I’m really looking forward to fighting [George] Groves and winning on Sept. 12.”

Badou Jack has better hand speed than Froch, and he’s got punching power that is close to being as good as Froch’s. I mean, I don’t think Jack can hit as hard as Froch, but I think he can hit hard enough to do the job on Groves if he doesn’t protect his chin and if he doesn’t get to Jack before he gets to him.

Jack was knocked out in the 1st round last year by the hard hitting Derek Edwards. However, that was a fight in which Jack was hit by a shot that he wasn’t ready to take in the early going of the fight.

Jack hasn’t been hurt since then, and he’s shown to have a good chin in his other fights as a pro. I think that Jack has the far better chin than Groves does. In other words, when the bombs start flying, I think Jack has a better chance of staying on his feet than Groves does.

“This is my first defense and I’m very excited about it, but I have always maintained an underdog mentality, and that will never change,” Jack said. “I’m trying to stay humble. I’m still the same guy but by becoming a world champion it has only made me work even harder.”
