margarito32By Paco Gurrola According to Mediotiempo.com, 37-year-old former IBF/WBA/WBO welterweight champion Antonio Margarito (38-8, 27 KOs) is planning on coming back to the ring in November or December of this year. Not only that; Margarito is contemplating a world title fight in 2016 if successful.

With his family’s consent, Margarito has already begun his training in San Diego California and will soon be under Robert Garcia’s hands to improve and polish his pugilistic abilities prior to his combat.

Margarito hasn’t fought since losing a 9th round stoppage to Miguel Cotto in their rematch in front of a sold out crowd in December 2011 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Margarito’s surgically repaired eye swelled up in that fight, causing the ringside doctor to advise that the fight be halted.

“I already spoke with Robert, I want to train with him, I am already training with someone else in San Diego, we have coordinated very well together, but I know if I want that big fight I need to be with Robert, first I would like to train 3 more months, and then have a tune-up fight before seeking a big fight.”

Margarito retired at 38-8 and 27 KO’s after losing to the Puerto Rican fighter Miguel Cotto.

“I don’t want to come back with a world title fight, I know I have to demonstrate myself, that is why I want 1 or 2 fights, I feel good, physically I have responded very well, my eye is doing well, so I shouldn’t have a problem coming back to the 154lb’s which is my goal.” Margarito stated.

If successful, Margarito stated that he would like to take on Miguel Cotto or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next year.

“Yes, of course I would like to go against one of them, but first i have to demonstrate that i can compete at that level, I am not worried because i know that I am here to give good fights, I just need the opportunity to demonstrate it.” Margarito concluded.

It would be exciting to see Margarito come back to the ring and provide boxing fans with exciting fights as he did before retiring. I can’t say I was a fan of him, yet he provided excitement in the ring, something that has been getting lost recently in boxing. It would be exciting to see Margarito fight Shane Mosley for example or a brawler such as Marcos Maidana at 154. Whoever he ends up fighting, I am sure it will be exciting and he will give his all in the ring. Stay posted.
