Will Donaire step up the level of competition after his KO2 victory against Settoul?

By Gerardo Granados: Earlier today in Macao, China, former multiple division world champion Nonito Donaire made easy work of an over-matched Anthony Settoul (W20-L3-D0), dropping him 3 times until Settoul´s corner stopped the bout in the 2nd round. It was great to see that Nonito regained his confidence after two easy fights in a row, but will Donaire finally dare to step up the level of competition or will he keep on hand picking is something that we will find out sooner than later.

Last March 28, Donaire had an easy comeback fight to the super bantam limit when he knocked out in just two rounds club fighter named William Prado (W22-L4-D1); it was not an impressive win due the quality of opponent he faced but it was a good start for him to rebuild his career after been knocked out of the featherweight division by Nicholas The Axe Walters in a unification bout between then WBA super feather Donaire and WBA regular feather Walters.

Settoul was tailor made for Nonito to look good, Anthony is a club fighter who didn’t have the experience nor have ever faced top opposition before stepping into the ring against Donaire; he has average speed and mobility also his punching power might be below average having only 8 knockouts against low quality opposition. In his last three bouts, Settoul defeated Faysal Messauodene (W5-L19-D1) by UD8; lost to Omar Lamiri (W11-L1-D0) by MD12 and before facing Donaire defeated Ignac Kassai (W14-L35-D2) by TKO1 in a six rounder.

I don’t think that Donaire should come close to Chacal Rigondeaux any time soon and should just try to get any of the super bantam belt holders to fight him, but better take on a solid contender before them. It has been said that he could get a shot at the WBA regular belt holder Scott Quigg next if Quigg defeats Kiko Martinez.

Donaire still is easy to hit and keeps on dropping his right hand leaving his chin high when he moves forward throwing a combination. He did looked better but he did it against a limited opponent so it’s better to wait until he defeats a top contender to finally be able to gauge his chances against the WBA – WBO super bantamweight Champion of the World Guillermo Chacal Rigondeaux.

Once Donaire faced a top contender after another and made it look easy, I think that now he has regained his confidence and should take the risk to pick a top ten contender next.
But what about the reader; do you think Donaire will step up the level of competition on his next bout?
