By Dan Ambrose: WBA World welterweight champion Keith Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs) survived a shaky 5th round to come back and score and 8th round TKO victory on a cut stoppage over former WBA 147lb champion Luis Collazo (36-7, 19 KOs) on Saturday night at the USF Sundome, in Tampa, Florida, USA. Collazo told the referee Telis Assimenios after the 7th round that he couldn’t see out of a cut over his right eye.

The referee then halted the bout and gave Thurman the victory. Thurman overcame a difficult 5th round in which he was hurt by a hard body shot. Thurman ran the rest of the round and looked in bad shape at the end of the round. The cut was caused by a head clash though, and it would have gone to the cards if Collazo hadn’t quit in his corner. Collazo said “I can’t see. It’s up to y’all [if you want to stop it].” The referee then saw this as a sign that Collazo was quitting and he then halted the fight.

After the fight, Thurman said he wants Floyd Mayweather Jr. next, daring him to “Come take my O.”

Thurman’s stock really goes down after this fight. I think he would have been beaten by guys like Marcos Maidana, Amir Khan, Danny Garcia, Errol Spence, Shawn Porter, and Adrien Broner. Thurman just can’t handle getting hit hard.

Based on how Thurman looked tonight, and in his recent fights against Robert Guerrero and Leonard Bundu, I wouldn’t give Thurman any chance at all of beating Mayweather. Right now, I think Thurman would lose to Errol Spence Jr., a fighter that Mayweather asked Thurman to fight on his undercard this September.

Thurman doesn’t want to fight the hard hitting Spence, and after seeing Thurman hurt tonight, I’m not surprised why he doesn’t want to fight him. Spence hits too hard, and he’s very, very accurate with his punches. Spence is also an top 10 ranked fighter, unlike Thurman’s opponent tonight Luis Collazo, who isn’t ranked in the top 15.

Overall, it wasn’t that great of a performance by Thurman. He got hurt by a 34-year-old non-top 15 ranked fighter, and he spent most of the fight running around the ring instead of going after Collazo and staying in the pocket. If Thurman wasn’t fighting in front of a home crowd in Tampa, Florida, I think he would have been booed by the fans because the movement was really terrible to watch. Mayweather used to do a little moving earlier in his career, but it was never to that extent. Mayweather always spent most of the time in the pocket against his opponents. Thurman doesn’t do that. He moves constantly and then hits and then runs. It’s not all that entertaining unless you like fighters that move and don’t stay in the pocket. What makes it look so odd with Thurman is he’s the puncher, and he’s running from the weak opposition that his management is finding for him to fight. He’s strictly fighting non-punchers, and still getting hurt.
