Mosley vs. Mayorga 2 going for $49.95 on PPV

mosleyBy Dan Ambrose: Boxing fans who want to see old timers Shane Mosley (47-9-1, 39 KOs) and Ricardo Mayorga (31-8-1, 25 KOs) fight on August 29th are going to have to pay $49.95 to see it on pay-per-view because they’re not going to have the fight televised on non-PPV.

It’s going to be really difficult to get boxing fans willing to pay to see this fight because on the same night on August 29th, Abner Mares will be facing Leo Santa Cruz in a fight in the featherweight division on free TV on ESPN as part of a Premier Boxing Champions broadcast.

Given the choice between seeing two relevant and exciting fighters like Mares and Santa Cruz fight on free television or having to pay $45.95 to see a couple of older fighters in Mosley and Ricardo fighting an old timers fight, I think it’s safe to say that boxing fans will focus on watching the Mares-Santa Cruz fight.

I’ll be surprised if the Mosley-Mayorga 2 pay-per-view even gets even 50,000 buys from the boxing public. The fight is just too late in the game for it to be much of interest for fans. It’s the equivalent of dragging out an old Yankees team filled with nothing but retired players and matching them against an old Oakland A’s team of retired players in baseball, and then asking fans to pay $45 to see the game.

While I think some diehard fans would pay to see it, I can’t see too many of them being interested. Now if there were some great from the past who was still alive on one of those teams, then maybe some fans would be interested. But for Mosley-Mayorga, I just can’t see there being any interest from fans in paying to see this fight, especially with Mares vs. Santa Cruz being televised on free TV on the same night on ESPN.

You can’t blame Mosley and Mayorga for wanting to put their rematch on PPV, because it obviously gives them their best chance of making money for the fight, but they picked the wrong date to have it on PPV. It’s also not a great fight for PPV. Mosley has been considered a shot fighter in the minds of many boxing fans for many years. You can make an argument that Mosley was already over-the-hill over 10 years ago when he lost to Winky Wright in back to back fights in 2004. Not long before that, Mosley has lost in back to back fights to Vernon Forrest in 2002.

Mosley looked terrible in defeating Mayorga by a 12th round knockout in 2008. Mayorga controlled most of the fight until getting stopped in the 12th round.

Mayorga was a good fighter at point in his career, but after his loss to Cory Spinks 12 years ago in 2003, Mayorga hasn’t looked the same since then. It’s hard to believe that Mayorga has looked shot for 12 rounds, but that’s pretty much reality.
