Floyd Mayweather JrBy Dan Ambrose: WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr’s next fight against former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) is rumored to be televised on CBS on September 12th, according to Sports Illustrated. The Berto-Mayweather fight hasn’t been confirmed as of yet by Mayweather Promotions, nor has it confirmed whether it will be televised on CBS.

For the fight, Mayweather will make between $30-35 million, which is a huge departure from the $220 million he reportedly pulled in for his last fight against Manny Pacquiao. Fighting Berto is obviously a much lower level fight than what Mayweather has been doing lately in facing the likes of Pacquiao, Marcos Maidana and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

It’s not that Berto couldn’t give them all a run for their money; it’s just that he likely wouldn’t hold up long against either of those guys.

The thought behind Mayweather fighting on free television on CBS is that Mayweather is giving a gift to the boxing fans, many of which shelled out $90-99 to see his fight against Pacquiao last May. It was a costly fight that was marred badly by Pacquiao revealing afterwards that he had fought with a torn right rotator cuff the entire fight. This news angered a lot of fans of the sport because they felt that Pacquiao owed it to them to reveal such a serious injury as a torn rotator cuff, because many of them wouldn’t have paid to see the fight if they’d known that Pacquiao wasn’t completely 100% for the fight.

Many of the fans wondered why Pacquiao simply didn’t postpone the fight if he wasn’t healthy because the fans paid a lot of money to see the fight. The fans purchased tickets to see the fight live paid out a lot of money, both for tickets and traveling expenses. By Mayweather giving back to the fans, he’s showing class by giving them something for free.

If it does turn out to be taking place on CBS, it’ll be a big deal. What will be especially interesting to see is whether Pacquiao will make a similar gesture to the boxing fans that paid to see the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. After all, Pacquiao was the one who took the fight with a preexisting injury. Will Pacquiao give back to the fans like Mayweather by having his next fight in 2016 be shown on free television on CBS, NBC or ESPN, or will the boxing fans have to pay to see Pacquiao fight on HBO PPV like usual?

Mayweather has had a number of top fighters interested in facing him for his September 12th fight such as Amir Khan, Shawn Porter, Keith Thurman, and Gennady Golovkin. Those have been the more vocal fighters that have shown interest in facing Mayweather.
