Mayweather-Golovkin response

golovkin94By Reveriano: I recently posted an article declaring that Gennady Golovkin vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. was the only viable fight. Predictably, I got a large amount of backlash by many boxing fans. Some of it was/is very valid and some of it was extremely childish. Nonetheless, I have taken the time to properly address some issues and further expand on my main theme.

The most common response I hear when I mention this fight is that we boxing fans will never be satisfied with Floyd Mayweather Jr. (and this can apply to other fighters like Miguel Cotto and Carl Froch).

The accusation has primarily to do with size. The argument is extended with the declaration that we will soon be demanding Floyd to fight Wladimir Klitschko. A hyperbolic argument should never apply or be used in a sport because sports by nature are meant to be competitive. That being said people who advocate this fight clearly realize that GGG weighs six pounds less than Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Meaning that Floyd very recently fought a much bigger fighter thus completely invaliding this argument.

The second and lesser part of that argument is the declaration that “Floyd (please remember this could also apply to Cotto and Froch) has done enough.” I will not give an opinion about his opponents and records. Simply state that I admire and appreciate Floyd’s fighting style. That being said if he himself feels that he has done enough and deserves to fight an easy fight that is 100% completely fine with me. I simply will not pay to watch a mismatch. Meaning I will not pay to watch him fight Amir Khan, Andre Berto, or Karim Mayfield. Because there is no way that any of them can even come close to beating him. If Floyd (and others) feel like they have done enough he can retire or air the fight for free. If they want my money they have to fight someone I want to see them fight.

The next argument brought up against Golovkin is the question of Andre Ward. Ward is an incredible boxer and extremely talented athlete. This is a fight that I would love to see.
As to the financial, yes he was paid more than Golovkin, but that has to do more with the inherent advantages of Ward position. Those advantages being that 1) He is American 2) He is much more marketable 3) fights less fights 4) and a gamble that they might be able to harness his talent. Whether those gambles pay off are to be seen. But how much someone is paid for something differs from the inherent value of the investment.

As to the most ridiculous claim, GGG is not ducking Lara. Lara to me has become the Amir Khan of the Middleweight. He has had the chance that GGG would love to have, to showcase himself in the national state and performed horribly. Remember, he got the fight against Canelo simply by bad talking and is now attempting to do the same for a paycheck. When it comes to perform he incorporates an extremely unfriendly fighting style. Lara just like Khan, needs to stop demanding and expecting large payday fights and really get to work kicking some backside.
