Floyd MayweatherBy Chris Williams: WBA/WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) has confirmed that he’ll be back inside the ring on September 12th against a still to be determined opponent. Mayweather also apologized for some of the people that are close to him. It’s unknown what was said by one of Mayweather’s insiders for him to apologize in this manner.

Before Mayweather’s statement about him fighting on September 12th, there were some boxing fans and fighters who felt that Mayweather would choose not to fight in September and instead wait around until May of 2016 to finish out his six-fight contract with Showtime in a big money rematch against Manny Pacquiao.

The move would make little sense though because if Mayweather can make big money fighting a lesser opponent for his next fight, then why would he wait until 2016 to fight someone who will make him huge money like Pacquiao. It makes a lot more sense for Mayweather to finish out his contract in September against whoever he wants to fight. With his recent schooling of Pacquiao last May, Mayweather has earned the right for him to fight whoever he wishes to fight. When you’re king of boxing, you can choose whoever you want to.

Speaking on his Facebook, Mayweather said:

“To My fans, your loyalty and support has given me the best 20 years I could ask for and while at the top, I plan to go out on top….see you back in the ring September 12th! I apologize for subjecting my fans and followers to the nonsense and childish behavior of some people close to me. At this level, I understand the acts of the company I keep is often a reflection of me and I take responsibility to make sure those type of antics are not tolerated or rewarded. Throwing stones is a sign of weakness- I choose to be strong.”

Now that Mayweather has conclusively said that he’ll be fighting on September 12th, we can speculate who the opponent will be standing across from him inside the ring on this date at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. While Mayweather has been mentioning Karim Mayfield and Andre Berto as his top candidates for the job in September, I don’t believe for a second that he’ll fight either of them.

In reading Mayweather’s face and body language when he speaks of those two fighters, I think he’s messing with people. I think the guy that Mayweather will fight on September 12th will be Amir Khan. I believe 100 percent it’s going to be Khan that will get the fight. He’s arguably got more cache right now than any other welterweight in the division when you remove Pacquiao from the equation due to his shoulder problem, even the likes of Keith Thurman, Marcos Maidana and Shawn Porter.

A fight against Khan would bring in the most attention for Mayweather and the most money. Fighting Thurman wouldn’t do the same thing for Mayweather because Thurman is still green in terms of experience and he’s not well-known in the U.S despite the fact this is where he lives and has fought his entire career. He’s not been around as long as Khan, and hasn’t faced the top names like he has.
