Mayfield: “I whooped Pacquiao and Khan in sparring”

Mayfield says that the beating he put on Khan was so bad that their mutual trainer Virgil Hunter actually had to stop the sparring session, presumably to save Khan. Mayfield says he always was able to land his shots in his sparring sessions with Khan.

Mayfield, Khan and Andre Berto are all under consideration for Mayweather’s next fight on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Mayweather is expected to pick one of the three for his fight. He hasn’t mentioned anyone else that he’s considering. WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman believes he’s one of the guys that Mayweather is thinking of facing, and the same with Kell Brook. It’s impossible to know for sure who Mayweather will fight, but it doesn’t make much sense for him to fight Mayfield or Berto, because neither of them have beaten a 1st tier fighter recently.

“I whooped Pacquiao and Khan in sparring,” Mayfield said in a press release. “Every time I sparred Amir Khan at Virgil Hunter’s gym, I put hands on him. So bad that Virgil had to stop the sparring sessions. Khan has also been brutally knocked out twice by Prescott and Garcia. The man has no chin and he wouldn’t last twelve rounds with Money Mayweather. He’s definitely the safer route.”

I guess Mayfield doesn’t see Khan as deserving of the Mayweather, does he? He sure isn’t bashful about giving his thoughts why Khan doesn’t deserve the fight with Mayweather. As for the sparring that took place between Mayfield and Khan, it sure would be nice if Virgil Hunter would chime in on what happened during their sparring sessions because I’d like hear what he has to say about this. I mean, I don’t expect Khan to admit that Mayfield was bouncing him around the ring, so we’d probably get nowhere fast if Khan started talking about the sessions they had. Hunter would know though, but I doubt he would tell because he trains the guys. It would look really bad if Hunter said that Khan was getting whipped so badly that he had to step in and half the sparring sessions to save him from getting bludgeoned into submission by Mayfield.

Mayfield is a good puncher though, and I could see how he would give Khan and Pacquiao a lot of problems during sparring. If you don’t use your size to stay on the outside and move around the ring against Mayfield, he’s going to hurt you with his compact shots to the head and body. He’s short at 5’7”, and able to generate a lot of power in close. If Mayfield was able to work his way to the inside against Pacquiao and Khan, I could see how he would hurt them with his big punches.

Mayweather might surprise everyone by electing to fight someone that isn’t even under consideration for the fight. So instead of fighting Berto, Khan, Mayfield, Brook or Thurman, we could see Mayweather surprise boxing fans by selecting someone like Fredrick Lawson, Kevin Bizier, Konstantin Ponomarev, Ray Robinson or David Avanesyan. Those are all technically contenders so Mayweather could fight them without people being able to say much.
