Martin Murray vs. Arthur Abraham possible in 2015

murray5By Scott Gilfoid: Matchroom Sport promoter Eddie Hearn dropped a hint today that his fighter #15 WBO Martin Murray (31-2-1, 14 KOs) could be getting a world title shot against WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (43-4, 29 KOs) in 2015.

If this turns to be true, Murray will have fought for world titles on four separate occasions in the past four years. That’s pretty incredible given that Murray has met with failure in each occasion and he keeps getting more chances.

When asked on twitter earlier today if the 32-year-old Murray will be getting a world title shot against Abraham in 2016, Hearn said “2015 even better.”

Hearn has a good relationship with Sauerland Events, the promoter for Abraham. We saw how Hearn’s fighter Paul Smith was given two voluntary world title shots against Abraham last year without having done anything to deserve the world title shots other than beating a handful of 2nd and 3rd tier fighters.

Given the relationship that Hearn has with Sauerland, I’d say that Murray has an excellent chance of getting a world title shot against Abraham in 2015, despite the fact that Murray is ranked at dead bottom of the WBO’s top 15 at 168. Abraham has a voluntary defense coming up for his next fight after he defeated No.1 WBO Robert Stieglitz by a 6th round knockout last Saturday night in Germany. Abraham can basically fight anyone of the top 15 that he pleases, as long as they’re ranked by the WBO.

The last time Murray got a world title shot, he was stopped in the 11th round by WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin earlier this year in February. Murray moved up in weight to the 168lb division after the defeat and has since beaten George Beroshvili and Mirzet Bajrektarevic.

I believe that Murray needs to actually beat somebody if he wants to get yet another world title fight, because it’s already forlorn. How about Murray fight some actual contenders ranked in the top 10 before getting another crack at a world title. At least if Murray beat someone good, you could say that he deserved of a world title shot. But for Murray to get whipped by Golovkin this year, and then beat a couple of unknown 3rd tier fighters by the names Beroshvili and Bajrektarevi, I don’t see Murray as having done enough to be given another world title fight on a silver platter.

It would be nice if some other fighters were given a shot at a world title rather than one guy getting four shots at a world title in four years. I’m just saying. Murray came up empty in fighting to a 12 round draw against Felix Sturm in 2011, and then losing a 12 round decision to former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez in 2013. And as I already mentioned, Murray was beaten by Golovkin earlier this year.

There are a lot of guys that Abraham could be defending his title against in his next fight rather than Murray. How about Abraham defending his WBO title against Gilberto Ramirez? That would make for a heck of a nice fight. You’ve got the Dirrell brothers who would make for exciting fights.
