(Photo credit: Hogan Photos) By Dan Ambrose: #1 WBC Viktor Postol (27-0, 11 KOs) vs. #2 WBC Lucas Matthysse (37-3, 34 KOs) is now officially set for October 3rd on HBO Championship Boxing, according to Dan Rafael per Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya. The Postol-Matthysse fight will be for the vacant WBC World light welterweight title that was recently stripped from Danny Garcia, and the fight will be staged at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
It’s a good fight matching the hard hitting Argentinian Matthysse against the unbeaten Ukrainian Postol. Its two different styles that we’re going to be seeing. Postol is a tall 5’11” known for his high volume punch output.
Matthysse, 32, is coming off of a grueling 12 round majority decision victory over Ruslan Provodnikov last April in a fight that saw Matthyssen hurt late in the fight. What was originally an easy fight for Matthysse in the first six rounds turned out to be a very difficult one in the second half of the fight, as Provodnikov rallied and was able to land a lot of his hard power shots to the head of Matthysse. Provodnikov’s face looked like hamburger from cuts that he suffered in the early part of the fight, but Provodnikov toughed it out and fought well in the later part of the fight.
Postol, 31, is giving away a lot in the way of experience for this fight. Before this bout, Postol’s toughest opposition were Hank Lundy and Selcuk Aydin. Neither of those guys are anywhere close to the kind of talent that Matthysse will be bringing to the ring in this fight.
The winner of the Matthysse-Postol fight will have to defend the #3 WBC title against unbeaten knockout artist Amir Iman.
Danny Garcia was stripped of his WBC 140lb title at exactly the right time because by losing the title now, he can avoid a difficult fight against Postol, another tough fight against Matthysse, and a very dangerous defense against Amir Iman.
Matthysse is more of a big puncher who mows down his opponents with his huge power shots to the head and body. However, Matthysse did show vulnerability in his loss to Danny Garcia two years ago when Garcia used a lot of blow blows, clinching, jabbing and movement to pound out a 12 round decision. Matthysse failed to use his jab or move his head in the fight, and this made it easy for Garcia to beat him. But what really got to Matthysse more than anything was holding and the low blows from Garcia.
The referee working the fight Tony Weeks let Garcia get away with low blows all throughout the fight, and it wasn’t until the 11th round that Weeks finally took a point away from Garcia for the low blows. By then, he’d hurt Matthysse in almost every round with the shots south of the border.
