Fury: I’ll KO Klitschko

fury5667By Scott Gilfoid: After complaining night and day for eons about wanting to get his big fight against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (64-3, 53 KOs), Britain’s Tyson Fury (24-0, 18 KOs) has his fight now scheduled against the Ukrainian on October 24th at the Düsseldorf, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.

It’s too bad that Fury is now going to have to actually try and produce in the ring rather than talking trash, because he’s really up against it in this fight. This is already looking like a mismatch of epic proportions unless Wladimir gets old overnight by October 24th.

“I promise I won’t do a David Haye and s— myself. I’ll KO this super champ,” Fury said to ESPN.com. “I don’t talk unless I can back it up.”

Fury chose to remind the boxing public about how former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye talked a lot of trash before his 2011 fight against Wladimir, and then came out and fought timidly for 12 rounds in losing by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision in Germany.

After the fight, Haye made himself the butt-end of jokes by blaming his poor performance on an injured toe that he came into the fight with. It was kind of similar to how Manny Pacquiao talked about him having an injured shoulder after his loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last May in their “Fight of the Century” in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While I doubt that Fury will come up with any kind of injury excuses after his fight with Wladimir on October 24th, I seriously doubt Fury will be producing a knockout in this fight like he’s talking about.

Fury is a slapper, not a puncher. If he gets his mind made up that he wants to try and KO Klitschko, then I see this fight ending really badly for Fury with him getting stretched out in front of the crowd in the football stadium in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Wladimir does well against guys that come out trying to slug. The only times he didn’t do well against punchers was when he stopped by Corrie Sanders, Ross Puritty and Lamon Brewster in the distant past. Those fights took place a long, long time ago before Wladimir had developed his current fighting style.

Unlike Fury, those guys were all big punchers. Fury is just a slapper, and he doesn’t compare to any of those guys. I can only imagine what a prime Corrie Sanders would have done to a guy like Fury; the same with Puritty and Brewster. Fury would have been in deep trouble against those guys.

“We are happy we found an agreement in the end,” Klitschko manager Bernd Boente said to ESPN.com. “There are always certain points and certain issues you have to deal with but the good thing is we reached an agreement and that’s what counts. Maybe it was good we had the pressure of the purse bid to reach an agreement.”

The Klitschko vs. Fury fight will be televised in America on HBO. It’s still clear which channel it will be televised on in the UK. It’s down to Sky Sports, BT or ITV. In Germany, it’ll be shown on RTL, of course.
