Froch needs to prove he’s “too big & too strong” for Golovkin

froch67777By Scott Gilfoid: Former IBF/WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) has been flapping his gums off and on in the past month about being interested potentially in facing WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs). However, when Golovkin and his promoter Tom Loeffler attempted to get the fight put together, they were met with silence from Froch.

In the recent past, Froch said that he going to make a decision in the first week of June whether he would return to the ring or not. Well, it’s not the first week of July, and Froch hasn’t said a word about whether he’ll be returning to fight or not. The only thing we’ve heard from Froch was some recent comments made to ESPN.co.uk, saying “I think it’s James DeGale or it’s Gennady Golovkin, Probably in that order.”

Last Saturday, Froch took to Twitter to say “Too big & too strong for GGG.” As soon as Froch said this, Loeffler called his bluff, telling him “Carl, there’s only one way to find out.” Froch chose not to reply to Loeffler.

My thing is if Froch isn’t interested in fighting Golovkin, I think he should stand clear, clam up, and stand back and watch his fight the guys that are interested in fighting him. By Froch saying repeatedly that he thinks he’s too strong for Golovkin, it comes across as he’s taunting him by giving him hope for a fight that he’s not ready to accept.

“If Carl Froch thinks he’s too big and strong for GGG Boxing wonderful,” Dan Rafael said on his Twitter. “Then fight the guy and prove it. Simple as that. Otherwise, silence.”

I agree with Rafael. When you get guys like Froch who have one foot in retirement, it just confuses things when he’s talking about fighting guys and then not doing it. Golovkin and Loeffler need to be focusing on only attempting to fight guys that are serious about wanting to face him. I don’t know what Froch’s angle is by mentioning Golovkin’s name on Twitter or in interviews, but it comes across to me like he’s name dropping without being interested in actually fighting him. By mentioning Golovkin’s name every now and then, it keeps Froch relevant and in the forefront of boxing. But it’s useless if he’s not serious wanting to actually fight, and it doesn’t appear that he is.

Golovkin needs move forward with his career and put his energy only on guys that are willing to fight him. That means forgetting about the likes of Froch, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Miguel Cotto. Instead, he just needs to keep fighting whoever he can that’s willing to fight him and stay in his own lame.

Froch can make so much money if he were to return to the ring to face Golovkin. I wouldn’t be surprised if Froch were to make $15 million for the Golovkin fight if they staged it at Wembley Stadium in London, UK. How does Froch not want to make that kind of cash? I just don’t understand it.
