Floyd told me he just wants a couple easy fights, says Mayweather Sr.

Floyd Mayweather SrBy Scott Gilfoid: Floyd Mayweather Sr., the trainer and father of boxing great Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs), says Mayweather Jr. says he’s just looking to get in a couple of easy fights before he retires from the sport. Floyd Sr. feels that if this is the way that Mayweather is going to be approaching what’s left of his career, then he should retire right away rather than stick around for the easy fights.

“Floyd told me he just wants to get a couple of easy fights,” Floyd Sr. said to Mlive.com. “My honest opinion, if he feels that way, he should get on out of the game.”

There isn’t much for Mayweather to pick from among the top welterweights, is there? Even if Mayweather picks out Amir Khan, who Floyd Sr. doesn’t want him to fight, it’s still pretty much going to be an easy fight. Heck, we almost saw Khan get beaten in his last fight by Chris Algieri last May. I mean, if Algieri had some actual guidance in that fight, he’d have known that all he needed to do to get the victory would have been to increase his punch output by another 20 punches thrown per round. The guy came very, very close to beating Khan. The thing is this is the same Algieri that Manny Pacquiao totally clowned last year in November.

“Anybody’s body, 20 years, anybody’s body gets tired – and it’s been every day of 20 years, and longer, for my son,” Floyd Sr. said.

Mayweather’s body isn’t tired enough for him to lose to guys like Khan, Shawn Porter and Keith Thurman, which are pretty much the only guys that Mayweather has to compete against in the welterweight division right now. He can’t fight Tim Bradley because he’s with Top Rank, and it wouldn’t make much money. Khan hasn’t done anything to rate a fight against Mayweather, and can’t even sellout the Barclays Center in New York.

I’m all in favor of Mayweather sticking around and fighting who he wants to fight instead of the guys that some people want him to fight. Porter and Thurman bring nothing to the table in a fight against Mayweather. Khan has a large fan base in the UK, but he’s been fighting record-padding opposition for the past three years, and he clearly doesn’t rate a fight against Mayweather. If Khan had been fighting the likes of Danny Garcia, Breidis Prescott and Lamont Peterson in rematches, and beaten them all, I could see Khan deserving a fight against Mayweather.

The only other way around Khan facing those guys in rematches is if he were to beat Thurman, Porter, Errol Spence Jr. and Marcos Maidana in back to back fights. If khan could run the table in beating those four fighters, then I think he would totally deserve the Mayweather fight. Heck, there would be no way that Mayweather could ignore Khan at that point. But unfortunately, Khan hasn’t faced those guys, and you can make an argument that he’ll fight them no matter what. For that reason, I can’t blame Mayweather if he puts Khan on ignore for the rest of his career.
