Errol Spence calls out Khan, Thurman and Porter for September 12th

spence53By Dan Ambrose: Unbeaten #8 WBA welterweight contender Errol Spence Jr. (17-0, 14 KOs) is making it known that he wants to fight one of the following top welterweights for his next fight date on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather Jr’s next fight date on September 12th: Amir Khan, Keith Thurman or Shawn Porter. Mayweather has already said that he’ll give up one of his welterweight titles so that Spence can fight a top name for the vacant title.

Mayweather is hoping that Porter or Thurman will accept a fight with the young 25-year-old Spence in order to pick up a vacant world title, but it looks like neither of them value a world title enough to want to fight Spence. Neither has stepped up as of yet to accept Mayweather’s offer. That’s a huge mark of respect that they must have for Spence, because you don’t usually see fighters like Thurman and Porter choosing not to fight for a world title.

“Everybody’s name; Amir Khan, Shawn Porter, Keith Thurman. I mean anybody who is going to get in the ring – like Floyd said, Floyd said he’d vacate one of his belts for us to fight, so I mean why not? Fighting on the biggest stage, MGM Grand on PPV on Floyd Mayweather’s co-main event? I mean how big can it get?” Spence said to FighthubTV.

Khan would be a good option, but he’s stuck on hoping to get the Mayweather fight. If he doesn’t get picked out for his next fight on September 12th, Khan will likely not want anything to do with fighting on his undercard against someone that could potentially knock him out like Errol Spence. If Mayweather doesn’t give Khan the fight in September, Khan will probably take another opponent similar to Devon Alexander to fight and then target Mayweather for next year in May in hoping that he gets that fight date with him.

“I’m not avoiding anybody, I’m not ducking anybody,” Spence said. “I just wanna fight young lions like myself.”

Fighting Spence would be ideal for Khan if he really wanted to put himself in the express lane for getting the Mayweather fight in 2016. If Khan beat Spence, he’d win one of Mayweather’s world titles, and he’d do it against a fighter that Mayweather really values. Mayweather fought Marcos Maidana after he beat one of Mayweather’s favorites in Adrien Broner, so perhaps Khan could get a fight against Mayweather if he beat Spence. Needless to say, it would be a very dangerous fight for Khan because Spence is a huge puncher, and he puts a lot of pressure on his opponents the entire three minutes of every round. If Khan thought he had pressure put on him in his fights against Chris Algieri and Lamont Peterson, he’s seen nothing compared to the pressure that Spence will put on him.

Spence fought in the 2012 Olympics for the United States and was beaten in the Quarterfinal by Andrey Zamkovoy from Russia by the score of 16-11. In the pros, Spence would likely destroy Zamkovoy, as well as the eventual gold medal winner Serik Sapiyev from Kazakhstan. The professional ranks is a much different story from the point scoring amateur ranks, which is really confusing and frequently doesn’t tell you who the best fighters are.
