Donaire looking forward to Quigg fight

donaireBy Scott Gilfoid: Nonito Donaire (34-3, 22 KOs) is in a good position to pick up an easy strap against WBA World super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (30-0-2, 22 KOs) later this year in Dubai if Donaire can get past his opponent Anthony Settoul (20-3, 8 KOs) on July 18th at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, Macao, Macao S.A.R., China.

Quigg will need to beat his opponent Kiko Martinez on July 18th, which is no given, for the Donaire-Quigg fight to have a chance of taking place.

Quigg’s promoter Eddie Hearn will need to agree to let him take the fight with Donaire. That right there could be the one hang-up for the fight between Donaire and Quigg to take place, because there’s no telling whether Hearn will let the fight take place between them.

Hearn is very good at putting his fighters in match-ups where they have an excellent chance of winning. In looking at the Donaire vs. Quigg fight, you can’t say that Quigg has an excellent chance of winning the fight. If anything, he might have a 25 to 40 percent chance of getting the victory, but that’s about it.

Donaire is almost unbeatable at 122, and in going back to his old vision that he ruled with an iron fist until losing to Guillermo Rigondeaux, you can expect Donaire to resume dominating just like before. That’s why I suspect that the negotiations between Donaire and Quigg will likely reach a quick stall like the negotiations between Hearn fighter IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook and Top Rank fighter Brandon Rios.

That’s another fight where one of Hearn’s fighters doesn’t have an excellent chance of winning. Brook has a good chance of winning, but definitely not an excellent chance. I mean, Brook could lose if Rios is at the top of his game like he was in his recent fight against Mike Alvarado last January.

If Brook can’t clinch 10+ times per round to shut down Rios’ punch output and inside game, I see Brook losing the fight, because he can’t fight a lick on the inside. Brook is totally lost on the inside, as we saw in his fight against Shawn Porter.

Donaire’s father/trainer, Nonito Donaire Sr., told the New Standard boxingmirror.com that Settoul is “a very important fight because he is looking for a showdown with Quigg. He is preparing for that fight also. [Quigg is] a strong fighter. He is not a world champion for nothing. We are here to fight guys that are good. Hopefully we can make it happen.”

Kiko Martinez has a good chance of beating Quigg on July 18th, and if that happens, Donaire will need to try and arrange a fight against Martinez for the WBA super bantamweight title. I think that’s a more doable fight than a Donaire-Quigg fight. I hate to say it, but I really don’t think Hearn will let his little money maker Quigg take the fight against Donaire. The money that Quigg makes is easy money with the guys that Hearn is matching him against, and if he puts him in with Donaire, that revenue stream is going to dry up quick to just a trickle.
