(Photo credit: Lucas Noonan/Premier Boxing Champions) By Dan Ambrose: Now that former undisputed light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (30-0, 17 KOs) has moved up in weight to the welterweight division, he says he would like to fight Amir Khan and IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook if possible.

Garcia believes those would be big fights for him. However, they would have to take place in the United States because he’s not about to travel to the UK and deal with the high taxes over there.

Garcia has a fight this Saturday night against former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KOs) on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The 27-year-old Garcia is expected to wipeout Malignaggi without any problems, but you never know. Garcia was supposed to beat Lamont Peterson with ease in his last fight in April, and he barely escaped with a win over Peterson.

The fight showed that Garcia is very flawed and hasn’t shown any improvement since his controversial win over Mauricio Herrera in 2014. It’s starting to look to some boxing fans like Garcia has been going downhill since his win over Lucas Matthysse in 2013.

“Yeah, why not?” Garcia told thaboxingvoice. “I think it’s a big fight to be honest with you. I think it’s a big fight. He’s a star in boxing, I’m a star in boxing now – it’d be a big fight, if it happens it happens – I’m down. When it comes to names, Khan’s probably one of the biggest names.”

I wouldn’t go so far as to call either Garcia or Khan a star in the United States. Garcia is popular on the East Coast of the U.S, but he’s not a big name on the West Coast or in the middle of the country. Khan still needs a lot of work before he becomes a star in the U.S.

Khan was on his way to becoming a star back in 2011 after his win over a past his prime Zab Judah, but he was then beaten by Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia in back to back fights. Since then, Khan has been carefully matched by first Golden Boy Promotions and later by Al Haymon. Maybe it’s just a coincidence that Khan hasn’t fought another big puncher since his loss to Garcia.

The chances of Garcia fighting Khan are zero. That’s not going to happen. Haymon is going to keep those two in separate lanes because it helps him more if they both win world titles than if only one of them does. That’s why they’ll likely never fight each other while he’s managing them. The only way I can see Haymon putting Khan and Garcia together again is if one of their careers goes belly up, and they simply have nothing to lose in being matched tough. Until then, they’ll be kept apart.

“He [Brook] has got the IBF world title. Those are the match-ups that I’m looking forward to. I definitely want to win a world title,” Garcia said. “I would definitely visit (the UK), I don’t think I’d fight (there) though! I heard the taxes are crazy over there!”

If Garcia isn’t interested in traveling to the UK to fight Brook, then he’s simply not going to get the fight, because Brook’s promoter Eddie Hearn definitely won’t let Brook go away from his fan base where he sells a lot of tickets in the UK. The money for Hearn and Brook is in the UK. Unless there’s someone like Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez willing to fight him in the United States, Brook is better off staying in the UK and fighting there.

Garcia isn’t helping himself by insisting on staying in the U.S for all of his fights. But of course he’s getting over $1 million just by fighting guys like Malignaggi, so why should he take any risks by traveling to the UK to face someone that he might lose to. Garcia has a good thing going with him being signed with Al Haymon and fighting guys like Rod Salka and Malignaggi on Haymon’s PBC fight cards in America.

Garcia will likely need to wait until Mayweather retires before he can fight for a world title at 147. He’ll then fight for one of Mayweather’s two welterweight titles that he gives up when he walks away from the sport.
