001-Danny-Jacobs-IMG_4514By Dan Ambrose: WBA World middleweight belt holder Daniel Jacobs (29-1, 26 KOs) is hoping to get a knockout victory this Saturday night in his voluntary title defense against #10 WBA Sergio “The Latin Snake” Mora (28-3-2, 9 KOs) on Premier Boxing Champions on ESPN on the undercard of the Danny Garcia vs. Paulie Malignaggi fight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

For Jacobs, this is his second consecutive voluntary defense after his win over Caleb Truax in his recent first defense. It looks like Jacob’s adviser Al Haymon isn’t taking any chances with him by taking his time before he’s finally forced to defend against his No.1 Chris Eubank Jr. or Tureano Johnson.

Jacobs will have a very tough time beating either of those guys unless he avoids the fights from happening. I don’t know how he can do that unless he chooses to take on the other world champions in unification bouts, and thus far Jacobs has expressed zero interest in wanting to do that.

Jacobs will be trying to score a knockout over Mora on Saturday. That’s going to be really tough to do because Mora is a slick fighter who avoids getting caught in exchanges. He’s not stationary, and those are the type of fighters that Jacobs mainly does well against. Jacobs struggles when he faces guys that move around the ring. We saw Jacobs take a beating in getting stopped by Russian Dmitry Pirog five years ago. All of Jacobs’ fights since then have come against guys that stood directly in front of him making it easy to attack.

“So there’s not a lot of fear as far as power is concerned but where he [Sergio Mora] lacks that he makes up in his craftiness and his slickness and awkwardness and sometimes he does engage in the action as well. The test with Sergio Mora is whether that he can be stopped or whether or not I can go the distance with him, he’s never been stopped before, so it will be icing on the cake to be able to not only to defeat him but to stop him in the match.”

Jacobs was able to score a knockout in the 12th round of his last fight against Caleb Truax. Jacobs did not look good in the fight, however. He looked very average until he was able to jump on a reluctant Truax in the 12th round to get a knockout. Jacobs didn’t fight like a world champion in that bout or in any of his other recent fights. He looked like a better fighter five years ago then he is now. Jacobs won the WBA 160lb “regular” title last year in beating Jarrod Fletcher, but Jacobs didn’t have to beat anyone good to win the title.

“I feel like I have a lot more advantages than he does in the fight. But whatever my advantages are and whatever gets me going, will be the deciding factor for me,” Jacobs said. “I would stick to. So if it’s my speed, then I’ll stick to using my speed. If it’s my power, backing him down, showing him what a real middleweight feels like, then that’s what I would do.”
