Boxing politics

Floyd Mayweather JrBy John Simmons: It is an amusing thing to watch the social media pages and see fans and media a like appeal or defend the situation in boxing right now, with the Haymon & Golden Boy feud hitting fever pitch in recent weeks we can start to see the fractures become worse.

While the world awaits an opponent for Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. the media and rookie fans are starting to decide the opponent themselves and have even gone as far writing articles on Andre Berto the man they believe has gotten the nod from Floyd Mayweather, further more they have begun to attack Showtime sports for their inability to name an opponent straight away. Something we all know has nothing to do with them but is Floyd’s choice alone.

As early as today Dan Rafael from ESPN wrote a tweet on social media stating that the holdup is contract negotiation and the finer details on Floyd Mayweather’s future. Showtime executive Stephen Espinoza has since came out and completely set fire to that tweet labeling Dan Rafael a liar and pointing out that no such discussion has taken place prompting Dan Raffael to remove that tweet moment later “Stephen Espinoza re-tweeted Dan Rafael
There hasn’t been a single conversation about extension or future rights…so that’s not the reason for any “delay.” Stephen Espinoza added, in response to this tweet;

Dan Rafael @danrafaelespn

Show/CBS not about to let Floyd decide to return to possibly go 50-0 & take fight across street. This is 1 of reasons for long delay.

What has become quite apparent is that boxing politics have become a tough hurdle to cross, Early this year we seen Floyd Mayweather Jr. stall the Manny Pacquiao fight right up until Golden Boy Promotions announced the Canelo Alvarez v James Kirkland fight, limiting the time in which Alvarez could lock in a venue and announce the Cotto fight instead. Saul Alvarez has made it very clear he wants the May and September Mexican weekend dates and Floyd Mayweather should not be fighting on them. Last week media writers alerted everyone to the fact that Alvarez and Cotto are really close and a November date might be imminent but this has not been announced yet something very odd considering the way Alvarez reacted to Floyd Mayweather fighting in September.

It seems quite clear that Floyd Mayweather wants to know when this Alvarez v Cotto fight will be so he can choose which opponent he needs to face in September he can’t really face Andre Berto in September and announce the fight as he knows quite well that as soon as he does Golden Boy Promotions will go head to head with Floyd on that date. Floyd Mayweather is not silly he realizes that the Cotto fight will outsell and Berto fight if he tries to put it together and announce before they do.

The problem that has arisen is we know for sure September 12 will be Floyd Mayweather’s fight we also know for sure it will be at the MGM grand however we just need the opponent named. So until we see Golden Boy Promotions announce the Alvarez v Cotto fight we may not see Floyd make his announcement until closer to September and if it gets too close he may just make that last fight on free to air TV considering his contract is with CBS/Showtime which also use their networks for Premier Boxing Champions making it hard for Golden Boy to also use that date for the Alvarez fight.
