Arum wants Donaire vs. Quigg in Dubai

quigg43By Scott Gilfoid: If WBA World super bantamweight champion Scott Quigg (30-0-2, 22 KOs) can get past Kiko Martinez in their fight on July 18th in Manchester, we could see Quigg facing former four division world champ Nonito Donaire (34-3, 22 KOs) later this year in a fight that Donaire’s promoter Bob Arum wants to stage in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, according to Philboxing.com.

Donaire, 32, will have to win his fight on July 18th against Anthony Settoul at the Cotai Arena, Venetian Resort, in Macao, Macao S.A.R., China. Arum feels that a fight between Donaire and Quigg might be more doable than trying to match Donaire against IBF super bantamweight champion Carl Frampton.

Quigg is reportedly interested in taking the fight with Donaire. It’s a fight that makes sense for Quigg if he can get a good purse split of the loot. He might be able to get a better deal fighting Donaire than Frampton. At the same time if Quigg were able to beat Donaire, which is doubtful, it would help Quigg to get a better deal with Frampton.

Right now, Quigg doesn’t have much on his resume in terms of meaningful fights. In his last four fights, he’s beaten Hidenori Otake, Stephane Jamoye, Tshifhiwa Munyai and Diego Oscar Silva. Quigg’s last quality opponent was Yoandris Salinas back in 2013, and Quigg had to settle for a draw. But if Quigg can beat Kiko Martinez and Donaire in back to back fights, it would definitely help him get a better deal against Frampton. I don’t know how the fight couldn’t get made at that point.

While Donaire should have a fairly easy time being the little known Settoul on 7/18, I have my doubts whether Quigg can beat Kiko Martinez. That’s going to be a really tough fight for Quigg, because he’s a straight up slugger without much finesse to his game. Quigg just goes out and tries to blast his opponents out each time he fights. But the thing is, Kiko Martinez does really well against fighters that come to slug with him.

Martinez struggles against fighters that move around a lot, or who do a lot of in and out type attacking like we see from Frampton. Martinez did well at times in both of his fights against Frampton. I mean, he didn’t win either of the fights, but he gave Frampton a tough time on both occasions.

Frampton wasn’t standing in the pocket the whole time trying to slug with Martinez. Quigg will likely go out there and try and bang Martinez out, and that’s going to play in Martinez’s hands.
