Will Cotto defeat the real deal Canelo?

1-cotto (1)By Ivan Godfrey: WBC middleweight Miguel Cotto looked sensational in his 4th round knockout win over the two time world champion Daniel Geale last Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Cotto has looked very impressive in his last three fights since losing to the previously unheralded Austin Trout in 2012. His opponents, however, have proved to be fairly mediocre.

After his defeat to Trout in 2012, Cotto employed the help of renowned trainer Freddie Roach. However, I don’t think Roach has not improved Cotto enough to help him to defeat a fighter like Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in their proposed fight in October or November on HBO. The 24-year-old Canelo is an exceptional fighter with hand speed, huge strength and a superb boxing IQ. This is a fight where boxing analysts are not sure of the result. However, people are just overreacting to Cotto’s mismatches in view in giving the Puerto Rican fighter too much credit for his wins over limited opposition in his last three fights.

In September of 2013, Canelo lost his fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. by a 12 round majority decision at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, Canelo was a young inexperienced boy back then, and he has grown hugely since in his last in his last three fights in beating Alfredo Angulo, Erislandy Lara and James Kirkland. Canelo is an Oscar De La Hoya type fighter who just wants to fight the best in boxing. That is why he is such a popular fighter at this early stage of his pro career. Canelo already has huge fan base and the sky is the limit for the talented fighter.

The Cotto vs. Cotto fight should be rejoiced at, especially when we look at the May 2nd “fight of the century” between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, which turned out to be a real disappointment to many fans. This is a fight for the real boxing fans, similar to a Micky Ward vs. Arturo Gatti fights in the past.

In terms of the winner of the Cotto vs. Canelo fight, I believe I need not make a prediction other than to say, tune in because this contest will be the savior of the sweet science!
