Rios: Mayweather made Pacquiao look stupid!

Floyd Mayweather vs Manny PacquiaoBy Dan Ambrose: Manny Pacquiao’s loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last month disappointed Brandon Rios with the way the Filipino fighter fought, and especially with the excuses that Pacquiao came up with after the fight. Rios thought Pacquiao should have taken the loss like a man, and not come up with an injury excuse after the fight.

Rios says he thought Mayweather made Pacquiao look dumb in the ring. I don’t know about Pacquiao looking dumb, but I do think he looked confused and timid for much of the fight.

Pacquiao had a few good early rounds when Mayweather was taking a break, but in the second half of the fight, Mayweather totally dominated the action and had no problems getting the better of Pacquiao.

Rios says he’d like to be the one to face Mayweather in his final fight in September. However, the odds of that happening are very, very low. Rios hasn’t done much to redeem himself from his one-sided 12 round decision loss to Pacquiao from 2013, and Rios also fights with Top Rank.

While Mayweather worked with Top Rank for his recent fight against Pacquiao, you have to imagine that he wouldn’t want to do it for a fight against Rios. There’s no upside in a fight of that type due to Rios not being a big name.

“Me and Floyd, let’s get it on,” Rios said to Fighthype. “Pacquiao just lost. Mayweather is Mayweather. We thought Pacquiao was going to make it exciting, and be the one to beat him. He made Pacquiao look stupid. No disrespect to Pacquiao, but coming on after the loss, don’t talk about any shoulder injury. Come on, man. Take the loss like a man and go on,” Rios said.

Don’t be surprised if we see Mayweather and Pacquiao doing it again next year after Pacquiao’s shoulder heals. There’s too much money for Mayweather to make for him to pass up a second fight against Pacquiao. After Mayweather gets a paycheck of between $40 million to $50 million for his September 12th fight against the likes of Amir Khan or Kell Brook, you can bet that Mayweather is going to look in Pacquiao’s direction for a rematch so that he can get a payday of over $100 million+.

To be sure, Mayweather and Pacquiao won’t get the same kind of money they did in their fight on May 2nd, because a lot of boxing fans won’t have any interest in seeing a second fight between them. However, enough fans will want to see a second fight for the two fighters to make a great deal of money.

The only thing that could potentially get in the way of a rematch between them two of them is if Pacquiao asks for too big of a split of the purse. Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum recently said that just because Pacquiao lost the fight doesn’t mean that he shouldn’t get a better split for the rematch.

“The fact that he [Mayweather] won the fight, what does that mean? The two of them together created such a bonanza — numbers we’ve never seen before — and without Manny, who could Floyd create a bonanza like that with?” Arum said via Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. “And without Mayweather, who is Manny going to fight to create as much money? Maybe we should get more than the 40 percent. They need each other to create this kind of money.”

If Arum continues with that stance of Pacquiao deserving a bigger split of the money in the rematch, I don’t think the fight can get made. Mayweather will laugh at Pacquiao and Arum and either retire or fight someone else.
