Possible names for Mayweather undercard

By Gav Duthie: Floyd Mayweather Jnr has hinted that in the absence of a super fight like Manny Pacquiao that he will attempt to provide fans with a loaded undercard to boost his next event. The only opponent that would potentially do numbers anywhere near the Pacman region would be Gennady Golovkin but that has already been ruled out.

The next layer is the likes of Keith Thurman, Amir Khan and Kell Brook and then B-level contenders Andre Berto and Karim Mayfield. Whoever he does fight he wants a showpiece event for what is potentially his last fight. Who could be on that undercard come September 12th?

Educated Guess

This analysis is based on a few factors that are as follows.

1. Fighters who box under ‘Floyd Mayweather Promotions’
2. Fighters linked to Al Haymon who also advises Floyd Mayweather
3. Fighters who would be available on that date

Badou Jack 19-1-1 (12) v George Groves 21-2 (16)
WBC Super Middleweight title

Mayweather currently has a relatively small stable of only 13 fighters which includes himself. Other than Floyd he currently has two world champions Mickey Bey and Badou Jack. Bey fights tough Russian Dennis Shafikov in July so would be unlikely to fight again in September. Jack v Groves is already confirmed with Sept 12 being mentioned alongside Aug 22. Given the increased publicity and the need for a good undercard I reckon Sept 12 will get the nod.

Adrien Broner 30-2 (22) v Jose Benavidez 23-0 (16)
WBA Light Welterweight title

Adrien Broner has already stated on twitter he will be back in September so given his ties to Mayweather it could be assumed he will fight here. Mayweather promoted the Broner-Porter fight and Adrien will likely want a high profile win to get back on track. Danny Garcia has finally relinquished his WBC and WBA Light Welterweight titles to move up to welterweight. WBA regular champion Jessie Vargas has also moved up to fight Tim Bradley so both those belts are up for grabs. The WBC title is being contested by Victor Postol and Lucas Matthyse. Jose Benavidez is rated #1 with the WBA and Broner #2. If Adrien could win this it would make him a 4-weight world champion and get him back on track and the fight shouldn’t prove that difficult to sort.

Leo Santa Cruz 30-0-1 (17) v Abner Mares 29-1-1 (15)

Leo is advised by Al Haymon and whatever Haymon says Leo does. He also fought on Mayweather’s last undercard for his featherweight debut. Santa Cruz has already stated that he is available in September and wants to fight Abner Mares. Mares is a great technician but both he and Santa Cruz have spent the last couple of years facing B-level competition so would they step up to face each other?

Errol Spence Jnr 17-0 (14) v Andre Berto 31-3 (23)

Mayweather has been pimping Spence Jnr out to anyone who will listen. First he wanted him to fight Thurman and now Porter. Both have refused but one would guess that the gifted welterweight prospect will fight somebody on the night. Who he will fight could depend on Mayweather himself. If TBE Floyd opts to face Brook, Khan or Thurman then I think Andre Berto would be a good fight for Spence Jnr. If Mayweather fights Berto then the youngster could face someone like Roberto Garcia again who he was supposed to fight last weekend.

One thing is for sure that Floyd will be working hard to make sure this is a great event. He wants to go out with a bang and a top line undercard will help him do that. These fights above are decent but if he can convince the likes of Porter and Thurman to fight each other or Amir Khan to be involved then it could really be something. Hopefully we will start to here more concrete facts in the next couple of weeks.
