By Scott Gilfoid: It looks Amir “King” Khan (31-3, 19 KOs) isn’t entirely out of the running for a lottery ticket winning fight against WBA/WBA/WBO welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) on September 12th in Las Vegas, Nevada.
According to Lance Pugmire, Khan is in the running for the Mayweather fight, as is former IBF/WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs). We already knew that Berto was one of the guys that had a chance for the Mayweather fight, but we didn’t know that Khan was being factored in.
Pugmire’s sources seem to have some inside information that suggests that the 28-year-old Khan is still very much alive and in the running for the cash out fight against Mayweather at the MGM Grand. If Khan is seriously being considered by Mayweather, then he might be thinking of trying to maximize the millions he makes for his September 12th fight because he’s not going to make a lot of cash if he fights Berto or the other guys he’s been mentioning lately Karim Mayfield.
Those are both opponents that won’t bring in a lot of pay-per-view buys because neither of them has been relevant at 147 for a long, long time. I don’t know that Mayfield has ever been relevant, but Berto used to be back in 2011 up until Victor Ortiz beat him.
“Told that with Special K Brook angling toward Brandon Rios 9/19, Floyd Mayweather 9/12 options are Amir ‘King’ Khan and Andre Berto,” Pugmire said on his Twitter.
Oh boy, this is going to make Khan’s day. He’s been up in arms as of late with the news of Mayweather being interested in Mayfield and Berto for his September 12th fight, but if Khan is still alive in the search for Mayweather’s next opponent, then I’m sure he’s going to be one happy camper.
Mayweather’s fight in September would probably sell well if he signs up Khan as his opponent. Khan is like a windup marketing team all by himself. He’ll do all the hard PR work himself by giving one interview after another. He’s obviously would need to come up with some new things to say because he can only repeat himself so many times with the old ‘I’ve got the style to beat Mayweather’ and ‘I know I can beat him. It’s a chess match and I always do well in those type of fights.’ Khan would definitely need to think up new stuff to say otherwise it’ll be him basically blabbing his mouth off saying the same tired old quotes that he’s been yacking for the past two to four years.
Khan needs the Mayweather fight in a huge, huge way because if he doesn’t get the payday, he’s going to eventually have to fight someone good for a change at 147, and I don’t see him being able to beat any of the actual good contenders.
In the past three years, Khan been fighting weak punchers and guys that were going nowhere at 140 and 147, like little 5’5” Carlos Molina, past his best Luis Collazo and Julio Diaz. Khan also beat Devon Alexander and Chris Algieri, both light hitters.
Unless Khan continues to face guys with a lack of punching power, he’s going to need to show that he can beat guys that being power to the table. I mean, I don’t know where Khan can go fighting guys that are no threat to beating him like what we’ve been seeing. Of course, there are a ton of weak punchers in the top 15, and Khan in theory could fight for the remainder of his career exclusively against those type of fighters, but if he ever wants to fight in a big fight, or fight for a world title, he’s going to need to deal with someone with a lot of power, and I just don’t see it going well for Khan.
