Mayweather vs. Golovkin would be a good match-up for September

Floyd Mayweather JrBy Scott Gilfoid: Today’s trash talking between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) and Floyd Mayweather Jr’s camp opens up what could be an interesting fight for Mayweather’s career final on September 12th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Unlike some of the possible opponents for Mayweather’s final fight, like Amir Khan and Kell Brook, Golovkin is well-known in the United States. Brook and Khan don’t have the name recognition for Mayweather to get much attention in fighting them.

Now if Mayweather were to fight Khan or Brook in the UK, then that would be a different story. But still, Mayweather’s PPV numbers will suffer if he faces Brook or Khan. That’s just the reality of it. If Mayweather wants a lot of PPV buys, he almost has to fight Golovkin in September, because he’s the only guy that will be available for Mayweather during that time that can bring in the buys for him. I for one don’t want to see Mayweather fighting Khan or Brook in his final fight. I mean, I want to see Mayweather fight someone good, not guys that were beaten or won world titles in a controversial manner by clinching 24/7. I want to see Mayweather fight the best, and Golovkin is the best.

There’s no demand for a Mayweather vs. Khan or Mayweather vs. Brook fight, at least not with the casual boxing fans. If you ask casual fans who Khan or Kell Brook is, they’re like to say ‘I have no clue.’ That’s why it would be a mistake for Mayweather to fight them.

Golovkin said earlier today that’s he’d easily beat Mayweather if that fight happens. This is what Golovkin said to TMZ.com: “Of course, I’d beat him, 100 percent.”

Someone in Mayweather’s camp told TMZ.com this in response: “Everyone in boxing wants to fight Floyd. It’s the biggest payday they could possibly have. [Golovkin] has never fought a top opponent in his whole career … we’re surprised you guys would even have him on your show to be honest.”

By saying that Golovkin doesn’t rate because he’s never fought a top guy doesn’t work. It especially doesn’t work if Mayweather chooses Khan to fight in his next fight. Saying no to Golovkin in favor of Khan would look really bad. Golovkin hasn’t fought a top fighter like Miguel Cotto, Peter Quillin or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, but it’s not as if Golovkin hasn’t tried. He’s been trying to get fights against them, but there’s been little interest on their sides for wanting to fight him.

You can say they don’t want to fight Golovkin because he’s not popular, or you can look at it another way. Perhaps the reason why they don’t want to fight Golovkin is because he’s just too good. In that case, Golovkin more than deserves a shot against Mayweather.

As broken down and as old as Manny Pacquiao looked in Mayweather’s last fight, I think Golovkin would be a huge improvement over that guy. I don’t think there’s anyone who follows the sport who believes for a second that Pacquiao could beat a fighter like Golovkin. If you threw Pacquiao in the ring with Golovkin right now and told him to attack him, I think Golovkin would knock Pacquiao out quickly just as Juan Manuel Marquez did in their fight in 2012.
