Mayweather not sure who his September opponent will be

Floyd Mayweather By Scott Gilfoid: WBA/WBC/WBO welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) hasn’t yet decided who his September opponent will be just yet, and he’s not giving any hints to fans who the guy will be.

Mayweather says he’s definitely fighting in September, and he’s looking for an opponent that will be a tough competitor for him. Amir Khan’s name has been mentioned a lot by fans and boxing writers as the guy that will possibly be in the ring with Mayweather in his September 12th fight in Las Vegas, but it could very well be someone else entirely.

If Khan gets passed up this time, he’ll likely be greatly upset because he’s been counting on getting the fight with Mayweather for so long. Some fans feel that Khan has a sense entitlement for the Mayweather fight. They believe that he feels that he’s owed the fight based off wins over weak punchers in Carlos Molina, Julio Diaz, Devon Alexander, Luis Collazo and Chris Algieri. Those are all good B-level fighters, but none of them are considered punchers.

“I look forward to fighting this September, hopefully we’ve got a good competitor”, Mayweather told Mayweather Promotions. “I’m pretty sure we will have a solid competitor. Everything takes time, we’ll see. We don’t know yet. We have to take time and we’ll see.”

There are some good fighters that Mayweather can fight like Danny Garcia, Kell Brook, and the winner of the Shawn Porter vs. Adrien Broner fight. However, I’m not sure how much interest there would be between Mayweather and guys like Khan and Brook. They’re non-Americans, and neither has taken enough time to build a fan base in the U.S.

Khan has tried over the last five years to build a fan base in America, but his failures in fights against Danny Garcia and Lamont Peterson were all huge blows to him creating a fan base in the States. Somehow when you lose back to back fights, fans give up on you. Since then, Khan hasn’t been fighting the kinds of guys that he needed to in order to make fans forget who he was whipped by Garcia and Peterson.

“He [Floyd Mayweather Sr.] doesn’t like the fight between me and Floyd because he knows I could cause him big problems,” Khan said to Skysports.com. “We are getting very close to a fight, I hope.”

It’s become forlorn to hear Khan talking about how he’s close to getting the fight against Mayweather. Instead of talking about the fight, khan should be looking to fight the best like Keith Thurman and prove himself. I’d like to see Khan fight Thurman or Errol Spence to see how he’d do against those guys, because watching Khan fight the light hitters hasn’t been interesting. It just seems so transparent in what Khan is attempting to do by taking the back door approach to getting a big money fight against Mayweather.

Mayweather should probably wash his hands of the welterweight division and focus on picking out an opponent from the junior middleweight division for hi September fight. I think someone like Erislandy Lara would be a good one for Mayweather.
