Mayweather: Golovkin would be a good fight for me, but I’m almost finished

Floyd MayweatherBy Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr. told the media on Wednesday that he scouted out WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin to watch some of his fighters after he kept hearing news about him talking in the media about wanting to fight him. Mayweather said that he thought that a fight against Golovkin would be a good one, but his career is almost over.

Mayweather then pointed out that he walks around between fights at around 150, meaning that he would be giving away a lot of size to the 170 pound Golovkin.

Instead of fighting Golovkin, Mayweather says he’s interested in fighting who he wants to fight rather than who the fans want him to fight. Mayweather specifically mentioned Andre Berto and Karim Mayfield as two guys he’s looking at to register his 49th win on September 12th. We can’t know if Mayweather was serious or not in mentioning those two fighters. He might have just done that in order to get them some badly needed attention in the media, because neither fighter has looked great lately.

Mayfield has lost two out of his last three fights, and his career is looking bad at the moment. Berto has lost three out of his last six fights. He’s won his last two against Josesito Lopez and Steve Upsher Chambers. Those aren’t good fighters though, and with his No.1 ranking, Berto will likely be getting a title shot against WBA champion Keith Thurman in the near future unless he plans on waiting out Mayweather until he retires and then go after his WBA title.

“Everybody was talking to me about him [Golovkin], so I had to take time out to watch this guy,” Mayweather said. “I actually made money on him. Golovkin goes out and does what he has to do, but at my weight right now, I walk around at 150, 148, 150. It could probably be a good fight for me. It probably would. But you know I’m almost finished. I think in September I’m going to choose who I want to choose. I think probably Andre Berto. I need an Andre Berto or Karim Mayfield to get me ready for my 50th bout. Everyone is saying they want to see No.50. I think Andre Berto has been looking good, as of lately. Everybody wants to fight Floyd Mayweather. Everybody wants to get that lottery ticket,” Mayweather said.

Golovkin would be a big fight for Mayweather if he wanted to pick up a victory that would mean a lot to fans, but it would also be a dangerous one, and it doesn’t look like Mayweather wants that risk right now.

Unless Mayweather were to get Golovkin to drain down to 154 and then agree to a rehydration limit of say 160, it might be a difficult fight because of the size disparity. But if Golovkin could be prevented in coming in over 160, there would be only 10 pounds separating Mayweather and the Kazahstan star when they entered the ring. But it would be very difficult for Golovkin to get all the way down to 160 and stay at that weight by the time he entered the ring. The chances are high that Golovkin would rehydrate up to 165 at least, and that would put Mayweather in the position whether to go through with the fight or not.
