khan45677By M.Malik: Right after the ‘Fight of the Century’ on May 2nd (Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs Manny Pacquiao), the fans started speculating who Floyd Mayweather Jr. would choose as his last opponent in September. The list of names that were being mentioned included: Amir Khan, Keith Thurman, Gennady Golovkin, Danny Garcia and even Kell Brook.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. is known for keeping the opponents name secret until he feels the time is right to announce the name. The situation has changed somewhat since May 2nd and I think we have a better idea who that opponent could be given the facts pertaining to the situation. Shawn Porter certainly pushed his name in to that list after beating Adrien Broner this past weekend. At the same time, we know who Mayweather will not be fighting in September. Floyd Mayweather mentioned Andre Berto and Karim Mayfield as possible opponents. But you have to be quite silly to think that he was serious. There is no way he would fight either one of those guys. Andre Berto obviously has a better chance but Karim Mayfield? You cannot be serious! Andre Berto is in the process of making a comeback from getting knocked out by Jesus Soto Karass. He has only fought twice since and beat Steve Chambers and Josesito Lopez. There is no way beating Steve Chambers and Josesito Lopez earns him a shot against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Then Floyd Mayweather dismissed Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter by saying that they should fight Errol Spence Jr. on his undercard in September. He wouldn’t take the shine off their names if he was seriously considering fighting them in September. He would likely just dodge the question and let the curiosity build. Another name you can cross off the list is Gennady Golovkin which shouldn’t come as a surprise. GGG is too big and strong and I don’t see why Floyd Mayweather would take such a big risk at this point in this career. If I could have my pick I would pick GGG to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr. Plus, if you are keeping up with the news, GGG’s Promoter is looking to make a fight with Carl Froch or David Lemieux in the fall. As much as they would love the fight, they know Floyd Mayweather Jr. will not be fighting GGG in September.

Next name you can cross the list is Kell Brook. While Kell Brook is well known in the UK, he is not well known in the U.S. He has only beaten one well known fighter in Shawn Porter and the fight was far from exciting with a lot of running and holding. Plus, his fight against Brandon Rios is expected to be announced very soon. You can also cross off Danny Garcia’s name since he is fighting Paulie Malignaggi on August 1st. He will not have enough time to get ready for Floyd Mayweather given he beats Paulie Malignaggi. It is also safe to say that Danny’s stock has plummeted after his not so great performances against Mauricio Herrera and Lamont Peterson. Many thought that he actually lost those fights.

Having said all that……guess who is left? Yes, Amir Khan!
