By Scott Gilfoid: In a sign of Amir Khan’s growing desperation to get a big money fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) in September before the American superstar retires from the game, Khan took to his Instagram account this week to get in a shot at Mayweather. In the photo, Khan is wearing a gigantic “Title” glove with the caption “Floyd Mayweather fight me. Promise you’ll wear this glove for the fight.”

This was obviously a shot at Mayweather for him having some issues with his last opponent Manny Pacquiao’s use of the Reyes puncher’s gloves for the fight. Mayweather objected to the gloves due to what he felt was a lack of padding. Unfortunately for Mayweather, the Nevada State Athletic Commission had already approved the gloves a day before, and Mayweather was stuck facing Pacquiao with him wearing those gloves.

As it turns out, it didn’t matter what gloves Pacquiao wore because he had problems landing his shots in the fight, and he only landed in the lows 20 percent level for the fight.

Khan is still sitting and waiting to see if he’s going to get picked out by Mayweather for what could be his final fight of his career on September 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayweather has said that this will be the last fight of his career, but many boxing fans suspect Mayweather will return to the ring in 2016 and possibly fight Pacquiao again, or another big name like Miguel Cotto.

There’s too much money on the table in those fights for Mayweather not to come back and scoop the cash up before he does eventually retire.

By sitting and waiting, Khan could sabotage his own career by losing more time waiting for a fight that will likely never happen. Khan already burned up a year of his career waiting for the Mayweather fight in 2014, only to see Marcos Maidana get the fights that he wanted. Khan then was hoping he would get a fight against Mayweather last May. But instead of Mayweather taking a low paying fight against Khan, he chose to face Pacquiao in a fight that made Mayweather well over $100 million.

If Mayweather fights Khan in September, he’ll have to take a huge pay cut because Khan isn’t a name that the casual boxing fans are familiar with, and even the hardcore boxing fans have little interest in seeing Mayweather beat up Khan. Fans want to see Mayweather fight guys like Gennady Golovkin, Pacquiao and Cotto rather than seeing him fight a guy like Khan, who has been matched up against weak punchers since being knocked out by Danny Garcia in 2012.

In Khan’s latest fight, he had to go life and death to beat Chris Algieri last May by a narrow decision in a really poor performance by Khan. He looked awful and barely won the fight. Indeed, a lot of boxing fans thought that Algieri had done enough to deserve the win. I had Khan winning, but only because Algieri made the mistake of not throwing enough punches.

If Khan doesn’t get the fight against Mayweather, then he really needs to step up and start fighting some good fighters for a change like Keith Thurman, Cotto, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Marcos Maidana, Lucas Matthysse, Ruslan Provodnikov, Kell Brook, Lamont Peterson or Danny Garcia.
