Khan: I want Broner, Thurman, Cotto, Bradley and Marquez, but not Brook

khan5899By Scott Gilfoid: Amir Khan still doesn’t know if he’s going to be getting the Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight in September, but that’s not keeping Khan from spreading his big fishing net around to try and catch some of the other big names in the boxing world who might be willing to entertain a fight with him in the near future.

What’s surprising is that Khan has included some big punchers among the list in Miguel Cotto and Keith Thurman. What’s not surprising is that Khan says that IBF welterweight Kell Brook isn’t on his list, and that he’s not going to fight him due to Brook still not facing the guys that he feels he should be facing.

If Khan faces some of the names on his list, I can’t help thinking that his pro career will be floundering and ready to plummet into the deep depths of oblivion. Seriously, if Khan takes on Thurman and Cotto, the chances are incredibly high that Khan is going to get knocked out straightaway.

If you add two more KO losses to Khan’s existing defeats, we could be talking about him being transformed from a contender to a high level journeyman. That would be five defeats For Khan, and he arguably should have an additional three extra losses in his fights against Julio Diaz, Marcos Maidana and Willie Limond. Some would say that his win over Chris Algieri was really a loss. I thought Khan won that fight, but I could see how you could call it a loss because it was really close.

“Kell Brook is not going to happen, but there are other fights out there that are going to happen like Keith Thurman, Broner, you’ve got Cotto at a catch-weight, maybe,” Khan said to Fighthype. “You’ve got Bradley, Marquez. Those are the fights that I want, and where I belong. I want to fight the bigger names in boxing, whereas Kell Brook is not a big name. He wants that big payday. Kell Brook just seems like he’s begging for that one big fight. Win or lose, he knows he’s going to get paid. That’s why he doesn’t take any risks before that.”

Khan is crazy if he doesn’t take the Brook fight because the money he’d get in that fight would be a lot better than he would in fights against any of those other guys. The only fighters that Khan can take that will give him a better payday than Brook is if he gets a lucky cash out fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao, but those are real long shots for Khan.

I know that Khan has been flapping his gums about him being close to getting a fight against Mayweather, but that’s what he says and not what Mayweather is saying. For that reason, I think Khan is just blabbering without any facts to back it up. I see Mayweather fighting in September, but I sure as heck don’t see it being Khan of all people. It’s going to be a likely unbeaten talent like Danny Garcia who gets the fight.
