Golovkin’s promoter looking at other options after Froch’s promoter says he hasn’t decided to take fight or not

golovkin883By Scott Gilfoid: Tom Loeffler, the promoter for IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs), is moving his star fighter in another direction rather than sit and waiting forever for former IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) to make up his mind whether he wants to take the fight with Golovkin or not.

Froch’s promoter Eddie Hearn says that Froch still hasn’t made up his mind yet whether he’ll take the fight or not. Hearn thinks Froch will hang up his gloves rather get in the ring with Golovkin.

Loeffler should have gotten a clue from the get go that he was wasting time having Golovkin expend energy and time waiting on Froch to make up his mind. Honestly, Loeffler could have already selected an opponent for Golovkin by know and we would have been that much closer to his next fight. Golovkin said that he wants to fight five to six times in 2015. That’s not going to happen if Golovkin spends valuable time waiting for Froch to decide whether he should continue his career or retire.

It’s hard for me to see what the big deal is with Froch. I mean, it should be a fairly simple thing to decide. It comes down to whether Froch wants to make $10 million to $14 million to face Golovkin in a fight at Wembley Stadium, or if he wants to simply retire and be content with his last two fights of his career being against the unproven domestic fighter George Groves. I know what I would do if I were in Froch’s situation. I would take the fight, but that’s me. Froch might not want to risk his hide taking on Golovkin.

“Eddie [Hearn] says that Froch hasn’t decided yet if he is going to fight or not, so I am checking all other options to see what is the best one for GGG,” Loeffler said to Dan Rafael of ESPN.com. “Hopefully, we should have something more firm in the next couple of weeks.”

I think it’ll be pretty easy for Loeffler to find an opponent for Golovkin’s next fight. Easily the best option for Golovkin is #5 WBA Tureano Johnson (18-1, 13 KOs). This is the guy that Golovkin should have fought in his last fight instead of choosing Willie Monroe Jr. That was just an awful pick by Loeffler and Golovkin.

Tureano Johnson would absolutely destroy a limited fighter like Monroe Jr. I think Johnson would have gotten Monroe out of there a lot faster than Golovkin because he wouldn’t have let up on him the way that Golovkin did. There are four guys ranked ahead of Tureano Johnson – Chris Eubank Jr., Monroe Jr., Arif Magomedov and Dmitry Chudinov – but I see Johnson as a lot better fighter than any of those guys. It’s not even close.

Johnson would smother all those fighters and destroy them with his pressure, power and inside game. Johnson kind of reminds me of Andre Ward a little bit with his excellent inside game. I honestly think Johnson would be a lot tougher fight for Golovkin than Froch, because he’s got an excellent inside game. However, I don’t think Loeffler will let Johnson get the fight with Golovkin because the fight would be a really tough one for Golovkin, and his stock would likely plummet in a fight against the 2008 Olympian.
