Golovkin wants Froch at Wembley Stadium, expects KO

froch1111By Scott Gilfoid: WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) says he’d like to face Britain’s Carl Froch in a fight at Wembley Stadium in London, UK.

Golovkin has been hoping to hear from Froch, who has been silent on the subject of fighting Golovkin after initially entertaining the idea. Froch had said he would make a decision whether to come back or not in the first week of June, but since then he’s disappeared. It’s very strange.

The fight would be a very difficult one for Froch because he’s so easy to hit. Golovkin would have countless opportunities to KO Froch by bouncing one huge shot after another off of his chin.

The 6’0” Froch’s height and reach advantage would likely do little in keeping the 5’10 ½” Golovkin away from him. Golovkin would sweep past Froch’s pesky jabs to rain right hands and left hooks on his head. The question is could Froch take those big shots for 12 rounds without hitting the deck like he did in his first fight against George Groves?

“Froch is a proven warrior in the ring with a big punch,” Golovkin said via Skysports.com. “He filled Wembley in his last fight with George Groves and I have fought in some of the biggest arenas in the US, so it would be a huge worldwide event and a big test for me.

There’s no question that a Froch-Groves fight could fill Wembley Stadium. But the chances of that happening are narrowing with each passing day that Froch stays out of the ring. He hasn’t fought in over a year since May of 2014, and he’s obviously going to be forgotten by British fans with the more time that he spends outside of the ring.

With the kind of money that Froch could make in a fight against Golovkin, it’s inexplicable why he wouldn’t return to the ring. But then again it’s been years since Froch has faced Andre Ward and the talented Andre Dirrell. Those are fighters that Froch should have faced once again years ago. Instead, we’ve seen Froch face the likes of 2nd tier fighter Yusuf Mack, a past his best Lucian Bute and Mikkel Kessler, and unproven domestic fighter named Groves. Given that Froch chose to fight those guys rather than Ward and Dirrell again could be a sign that Froch isn’t serious about wanting to choose real tests for himself. Further, Froch wanting the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight recently is a strong indication that he’s not looking for guys that would really challenge him in the ring.
“I would come to Britain,” Golovkin said.

“I think you’ll see a lot of action and a KO if the fight with Froch takes place,” Golovkin said via Thesub.co.uk.

It’s nice that Golovkin would be willing to fight Froch in the UK, but it probably won’t matter because I seriously doubt that Froch would want to face a live body like Golovkin because he’s so much different from the guys that Froch has been padding his record with in the past four years. Golovkin is a real talent, and he’s still young and in his prime.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we heard back from Froch and his promoter Eddie Hearn saying that they’ll only fight Golovkin in Nottingham, UK, Froch’s hometown. But I don’t think that would deter Golovkin from taking the fight. I don’t think he would care because the judges and the referee wouldn’t be an issue for him, because he would look to turn them into spectators by knocking Froch out. In other words, I don’t think Golovkin would be worried about getting robbed in Nottingham because he would bring his own judges and referee in the form of his two fists.
