Golovkin is too big for Mayweather, says Molina

1-golovkin3 (14)By Dan Ambrose: A lot of boxing fans want to see WBA/WBC/WBO welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) face unbeaten WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) in a battle of the unbeaten fighters at 154 on September 12th in what could be Mayweather’s final fight of his career.

One person who thinks it would be asking too much of Mayweather to take the fight is light welterweight John Molina. He believes that Golovkin would have too much of a size advantage over Mayweather for that fight to take place, even though Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, a fighter that Mayweather already beat, is actually a bigger fighter in terms of weight than Golovkin.

Mayweather already proved that he could beat the 175lb Canelo, so asking him to beat the 170lb Golovkin would seem like fair game, because he’s actually lighter than Canelo. But Molina thinks it would be unfair to ask Mayweather to take the fight with Golovkin despite him offering to melt down to 154 to take the fight

“I think there’s too much of a weight difference [between Golovkin and Mayweather],” Molina said to Fighthype. “Gennady Golovkin is a great fighter, and a great finisher. If he gets an opponent within his sights, he’s going to knock them out. That would be like trying to swat a gnat,” Molina said about Golovkin attempting to land one of his big shots against Mayweather. “I don’t see the fight happening. It would be too risky for Floyd Mayweather. It’s like asking to see if Floyd Mayweather would fight Vitali Klitschko.”

Mayweather said recently that he could beat Golovkin even at his normal weight of 150. He feels that there’s nothing special about him and that he would be too intelligent for the Kazakhstan star.

It would give Mayweather a chance to back up what he’s talking about if he were asked to take the fight with Golovkin, who would likely come into the fight no heavier than 165, which is the same weight that Marcos Maidana weighed in at for his first fight against Mayweather.

The only thing that Mayweather would need to prove is whether he could take the heavier shots from Golokvin, because he would certainly be punching with better power than Canelo and Maidana did in their fights with Mayweather. I think it’s ridiculous for Molina to compare Golovkin to heavyweight Vitali Klitschko.

If Golovkin weighs less than Canelo and the exact same as Maidana, then how do you compare him to Vitali? What Molina isn’t saying is that Golovkin hits harder than Canelo and Maidana, and has better skills. The only reason for Mayweather not to take a fight against Golovkin is because he hits too hard, not because of his weight, which isn’t heavier than Maidana or Canelo were when they fought Mayweather.

“Even at my weight, he can’t beat me,” Mayweather said about Golovkin. “He can’t beat me. I thought he was straight up and down. No special effects. He can punch, but I seen him in his last fight [against Willie Monroe]. I don’t even know who that guy was. If I worked with the guy, the guy would have beaten him.”

I think Mayweather would get caught eventually by Golovkin during their 12 round fight, and I don’t think Mayweather would handle it well enough to escape from winding up on the canvas for the 10 count. It’s not that Mayweather doesn’t have the talent to out-box Golovkin.

The problem is Golovkin hits so hard, like a fighter two divisions above him rather than like a middleweight. If Mayweather gets nailed by one of Golovkin’s big shots, I think he would be on the canvas.
