Geale weighs in at 182lbs for Cotto fight tonight

By Dan Ambrose: In what could be bad news for WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KOs), his opponent Daniel Geale (31-3, 16 KOs) reportedly weighed in at 182 pounds tonight on HBO’s scales at the Barclays Center Arena in Brooklyn, New York.

That’s not good for Cotto because he’ll be giving away a lot of weight. Granted, Geale weighed in with his clothes on, but you’ve got to figure that he is likely close to 177lbs or so. Cotto will probably be little more than 160lbs for the fight, and that means he’ll be giving away almost 20 pounds in addition to three inches in height and four inches in reach.

“Daniel Geale stepped on the HBO scale tonight at arena in street clothes and weighed 182. 182!!!! #boxing #Cotto-Geale,” Dan Rafael said on his twitter.

Geale weighed in at the 157lb catch-weight limit on Friday during the weigh-in. This tells you that Geale put on 20 pounds overnight in rehydrating. That’s a lot of weight. If it doesn’t slow him down in the 2nd half of the fight, he could could give Cotto all kinds of problems in this fight. It would obviously teach Cotto that he needs to forget about trying to fight at middleweight. He would need to move back down to safer waters at 154 to resume his career at his old weight class. In turn, that might mean no fight against Gennady Golovkin in the future unless Golovkin were willing to drain all the way down to 154 to accommodate Cotto. I don’t think that’s going to happen though because Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez said recently that the only guy that Golovkin would come down to 154 to fight is Floyd Mayweather Jr., and no one else.

Geale could end up crushing Cotto if he knows how to use his weight to his advantage. It’s unreal to have that kind of a size advantage in a middleweight fight. We see big size advantages in fights at heavyweight, but it’s a much different story with those guys because they already have tons of size to begin with. But it could be a big deal for Cotto to be out-weighed like this in this fight. That’s going to be really difficult for Cotto to be facing a guy that out-weighs him by 20 pounds.

Cotto’s trainer Freddie Roach said on Friday that they picked Geale because they felt he could give Cotto rounds to help him get ready for a fight against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez later this year, but this could backfire on Roach and Cotto if Geale is simply too big for him in this fight.
