Froch excited at being underdog against Golovkin

froch67By Scott Gilfoid: It’s starting to look like Britain’s Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) is going to return to the ring for a catch-weight fight at 164 pounds against middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) in a fight that would take place in the UK.

Froch says he likes the idea of people not giving him much of a chance of beating Golovkin, because wants the opportunity of proving people wrong. However, the last time Froch was a huge underdog in a fight against Andre Ward in 2011, Froch failed to prove anyone wrong, as lost that fight against Ward.

What made that defeat even worse for Froch is the fact that Ward came into the fight with a fractured left hand, and was still able to beat Froch one-handed.
Froch went on to say that he doesn’t think he’s going to make a retirement announcement this week. In other words, it looks like he’ll be continuing his boxing career at least for one more fight.

“He’s a tough kid [Golovkin], he’s unbeaten and he’s got a knock-out punch,” Froch said to Talksport.com. “I don’t think many people would give me a chance and you know what, that excites me. I like that. Retirement is always on my mind and I was hoping to make a decision this week actually, but it looks like I’m not going to be making that announcement.”

Froch also says he would like to face IBF super middleweight champion James DeGale because he sees it as an easy fight, and he’d like to expose DeGale in front of the British public. But if Froch is going to take that fight, then he’ll need to take it after the Golovkin fight.

The problem with Froch facing DeGale is he’d likely be taking the fight on the heels of a knockout loss to Golokvin. I mean, I’m sure the British boxing public would still be interested in seeing Froch-DeGale after Froch loses to Golovkin, but I don’t think the interest or the cash will be nearly as good under those circumstances. The money obviously would be very good for both fighters, but not quite what it would be if Froch went straight into the DeGale fight straightaway.

Froch went onto say that he’s still got some things that he needs to decide on. He’s kind of concerned about his yearlong layoff from the ring. He feels he can get into shape for the fight against Golovkin, but he wonders how that would affect him. It would definitely give Froch a good excuse to use if he does lose to Golovkin. He can always blame the loss on him being out of the ring for an entire year. Of course, I don’t know how many people would buy the excuse, but it’s something that Froch could still theoretically pull out of his hip pocket after pealing himself up off the canvas following a knockout loss to the hard hitting destroyer Golovkin.

I would like to think that Froch would take the high road and not come up with a bunch of excuses for his loss to Golovkin, but the fact that Froch is already flapping his gums about him having concerns about the long layoff, it seems like we could be going in the direction of excuses being used.
