Ellerbe: Floyd will decide who he fights and when he fights

floyd972By Chris Williams: Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe says Floyd Mayweather Jr. is still planning on fighting in September, but they haven’t sat down to discuss who the opponent will be. Ellerbe makes it clear that only Mayweather himself will be the one to make a decision about who, when and where he plans on fighting.

Mayweather is not going to be rushed or pressured by anyone to fight a particular fighter or when to announce who the fighter will be. Amir Khan is one of the names that has been brought up by some as a potential opponent for Mayweather, but Ellerbe says they haven’t even started talking about who it’ll be.

Mayweather will make his decision and you count on him picking an excellent opponent for his fight. You can expect Mayweather to make an announcement on his next opponent by mid-July to early August. It might not leave a lot of time to market the fight, but Mayweather’s name will be enough to ensure that his fight sells big in the pay-per-view market.

Realistically, we’re looking at four to eight weeks before Mayweather makes his decision on who his September 12th opponent will be. Like always, you can count on Mayweather to fight at the beautiful MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. But if Mayweather decides he wants to fight someplace else, it’ll be his call. He’s the decider.

“He [Mayweather] said he wants to go in September and I haven’t heard any different,” Ellerbe said to Mlive.com. “But we haven’t had a conversation about it. There are a number of good fighters out there all vying for a shot at the kind of the hill.”

I think are some good contenders out there that would be perfect for Mayweather’s next fight. Danny Garcia is certainly one of them. Khan is the running. Kell Brook is a good name. All of these guys would likely give Mayweather a better fight than his last opponent Manny Pacquiao. After all the talking that Pacquiao, his trainer Freddie Roach and promoter Bob Arum had done, it was sad to see how lost Pacquiao looked against Mayweather. Pacquiao fought like he didn’t have any idea what he needed to do, and Roach gave no real guidance in the corner. Roach looked like he was out of his element, and too much in shock to think of a plan-B for Pacquiao to use.

“Floyd will determine who he fights and when he fights and no one will rush his decision,” Ellerbe said. He’ll make up his mind who he’s fighting, if he’s fighting, and we’ll go from there.”

There is no rush for Mayweather to make a decision. He’s a businessman, so whoever he chooses, he’ll have done his homework well, and will make sure it’s the best possible fight for him in terms of business side of the game. But you can count on Mayweather selecting an opponent that the boxing public want to see him fight. He’s not going to pick someone that fans have no interested in seeing him fight. Mayweather has a keen sense of who the fans want him to see, and that’s who he’ll likely be facing.
